Left Brain Search = Google. Right Brain Search = X
69 schedule::attendees
Location Hilton, Salon H
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Ever wonder why Google isn't very helpful in finding something fun to do tonight? Search engines have gotten really good at finding information that literally matches our keywords, but they fall short when our needs and priorities are either hard to express or hard to match directly to the target content. These limitations are giving rise to a new set of search experiences based on semantic understanding and recommendations that are personal, social, and contextual. Companies like Netflix, Yelp and Pandora have kicked off the first wave of new search. By focusing on searching by how we naturally think, talk and feel about the matter at hand, we can begin to find information that's relevant to us both logically and emotionally. In this panel, we will look at the emerging technologies and user experiences that are creating the next big thing for the search industry.

The Future of Touch User Interface Design
132 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom A
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Although touch user interfaces have been around since the 1960s, they did not take off in the consumer mainstream until 2007. The last five years have seen a widespread acceptation of touch user interfaces, and many mobile phone and PC manufacturers have launched their version of a touch user interface. However, all these user interfaces still feature a similar, somewhat limited touch interaction language. How will touch develop in the coming years? Will multi-user multi-touch become important? How does voice, stylus and even air evolve our vocabulary? Will 2D touch develop into 3D touch? This panel will discuss the possibilities, and make projections into the future. We encourage you to explore this and much more with us.. join the discussion!

Embracing NoSQL - Your First Cassandra Project
61 schedule::attendees
Location Sheraton, Capitol E-H
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  What is Cassandra? What is NoSQL? Why are sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google and Digg all using these new technologies? And what does that mean to me? The popularity of the NoSQL movement has exploded in the last year or two, as a number of these non-traditional data storage systems have gone from experimental curiosities to powerful production-ready engines that power the largest real-time social networking sites on the Web. Born out of Facebook, Cassandra is one of super-hot players in this new movement. We recently had an opportunity to build a new social networking site using it for the first time, and we want to share what we learned. In this presentation: * You will discover the NoSQL movement and the big players who lead it. * You will learn both *how* and *why* you should build your site using Cassandra. * You will understand what Cassandra offers, and how it differs from traditional databases as well as other NoSQL competitors like CouchDB and MongoDB. * You will walk through real code examples that can help you bootstrap your own Cassandra project. * You will see where we stumbled along the way, so you can avoid making the same mistakes. Code samples are in Ruby on Rails.

We’ll also discuss the impact this can have on current native application strategies for Windows, Windows Phone 7, Mac, iPhone/iPad, and Android by looking at the impressive work that is being done today with the Web and apps to deliver compelling consumer experiences. But we’ll also address the shortcomings and the reality of HTML and what Web and app designers and developers can and should be doing today. This session is sponsored by Microsoft.

SuperHappyDevHouse
51 schedule::attendees
Location Speakeasy
eventtype  Unofficial Party
event::about

For the first time ever, SuperHappyDevHouse is coming to SXSW! Join us for an evening of hacking, revelry, LEGO® MINDSTORMs® roboticking, and good times that the Silicon Valley event is known for the world over.Don't miss this!

What is SuperHappyDevHouse?

The original idea for SHDH was something like “20% time for people who don’t work at Google” (even though the event wasn’t founded by Googlers). The event has since evolved into a monthly collaborative event for exchanging ideas, working together, and celebrating the spirit of the independent, DIY hacker.

The DevHouse will kick off at 7pm following the transition from the Google Developer Event. We will open the event with welcome remarks, an overview of the venue and what’s happening where and follow with a vivid retelling (and slideshow) of the history of DevHouse, beginning with its roots in Silicon Valley and spreading worldwide. We’ll also describe the LEGO® hackathon taking place on the third floor throughout the event and invite participation. We’ll close by thanking each sponsor and announcing the sponsored drinks; food will be served and all three bars will open.

Around 8:15pm we’ll prep for lightning talks on the main stage on the first floor. We expect fast-paced, intelligent, funny, and clever talks to run one after another — no more than 5 minutes each — covering subjects like tech hacks, big ideas, best practices, crazy experiences, or other topics that might interest the varied DevHouse audience.

Designing for Android
35 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom E
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  It's time to stop creating "Android versions of iPhone apps" and start creating apps made especially for the unique technological and design features of Android. What many designers are approaching as challenges - the multiple devices, the buttons, the lack of rules and constraints - others are taking as an open invitation to innovate without bounds. Most users aren't comparing iPhone and Android apps side by side, and neither should the designers making them. Whether you're porting an app or creating something original, this session explores why you should approach Android with fresh eyes and stop designing with iPhone in mind.

In this visionary talk, Blake Mycoskie shows you how to succeed in a new era of relentless competition and heightened social awareness. Why is philanthropy your best competitive advantage? How do you make money and do good simultaneously? How are the two acts intertwined? At TOMS -- a self-sustaining, for-profit company -- the act of giving is the cornerstone of its business model, integral to its financial success. In a behind-the-scenes look at how it all works, Mycoskie shares counterintuitive ideas ("In tough times, give more!") that you can apply to your own business. His bold, winning strategies are proven, and have been talked about by Bill Clinton, the Obama administration, and the hundreds of thousands of customers that have joined the TOMS Movement by buying a pair of shoes. Inspired, inspiring and most of all practical, Mycoskie presents a new direction for business, offering TOMS as his prime case study. After hearing him speak, you too will know why giving just makes sense.

Be a Lead Generation Superstar with HTML5 Forms
57 schedule::attendees
Location Sheraton, Capitol A-D
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Some of the most exciting enhancements coming in HTML5 are centered around the specifications made to improve online forms on the web. These new features have been "coming" for a long time now and we're here to share how you can use these new capabilities to improve your conversion rates and increase your bottom line. We'll look at and share some aggregate data on our end in addition to updating you on the current research and best practices that can come from using these new technologies. Most people will know that this is new technology that isn't supported in all browsers. We'll cover how that's OK and what you need to do to design them around the ideas of progressive enhancement. We'll also cover how many of these features can use fallback technology to implement the same idea until all the browsers catch up. Particular attention will be paid to how mobile devices can benefit from these new features perhaps even more so than desktop browsers. The technical aspects of using the new features of HTML5 forms will be covered after it is made clear why using that feature is a good idea. New features include: - Data types that didn't exist before like number, date, search, and more. - Autofocus - Placeholder text - Datalists - Required fields - Validation / Regex - Keygen - Output - Progress

Creating a Unique Social Experience
47 schedule::attendees
Location Hyatt, Hill Country CD
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  "What is good social strategy" is fundamentally changing. Instead of everyone wanting to match competitor's social strategy (they have a blog & facebook so I should have a blog & facebook), we should be creating unique social experience that differentiate us from competitors. Apple wants their products to be unique from other computers and Abercrombie wants their shopping experience to be different from other stores....Why shouldn't we want social experiences to be different enough from competitors that the experience itself becomes part of the brand? Powerful example = NBC's O&O local TV stations where they swapped out comments on news articles for a custom feedback system where people register their mood for how an article makes them feel. This exponentially increased interactions and gave people a new way to find local news. Instead of browsing random categories like "around town"; NBC visitors find "news in my city that people are laughing at" or "news...people are furious about". The unique interactions have rocketed NBC's numbers in a commodotized space (same boring stuff on ABC, CBS, local newspaper, radio) In just 12 months they DOUBLED registered users to 12 Million and TRIPLED traffic in an industry that is lucky to get a 10% increase: http://bit.ly/bd2dpD

Steve Krug Explains It All for You
96 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom A
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  Steve Krug
event::about  Nowadays, Steve (Don’t Make Me Think) Krug is fixated on getting everyone to do their own usability testing. It’s almost sad, really. Bordering on an obsession. And it *would* be sad, except for the fact that usability testing turns out to be the best thing anyone can do to improve a Web site (or Web app, or desktop app, or iPad app—you get the idea) that they’re working on. Last year, he boiled down everything you need to know to do your own testing into 162 pages in his second book, Rocket Surgery Made Easy. Now, for people who haven’t got two hours to read a really short book (with lots of illustrations), he’s going to boil it down into a SxSW talk…complete with a live demonstration. You’ll leave the room ready—and eager--to start testing.

Voices From The HTML5 Trenches: Browser Wars IV
106 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom C
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  The term HTML5 now refers to the much-hyped kitchen sink of the web. It covers *everything* including things not officially part of the HTML5 specification. Yet "HTML5" is now the catch phrase to describe the new wave of platform competition on the web, and browser vendors vie to outdo each other on benchmark tests touting compliance and performance. Every major browser vendor -- Apple, Opera, IE, Chrome, and Firefox -- will have a significant browser release by SxSW 2011. Microsoft's recent IE9 press event suggests that they are "all in for HTML5." So if all of us browser vendors are "all in" for HTML5, what does this mean for web developers? And what's up with the dirty marketing buzz around tests and demo pages? This panel will expose the areas where we browser vendors cooperate as well as compete, and will push on the painful spots where we seem to disagree. We'll bring every major browser vendor to the table, and talk about open video on the web (and video codecs), what this all means to Flash, APIs (including contentious ones, like databases), CSS (including once hot areas like fonts) graphics, SVG vs. Canvas, WebGL, Device APIs, and security. This browser wars panel will be less like Inside Baseball, and more about the practical issues confronting web developers today. We'll poke at the raw spots that browser vendors need to discuss. As always, audience participation will account for a substantial chunk of time.
