Why Would We Think Social Media Is Revolutionary?
133 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom D
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  Clay Shirky
event::about  The conversation around social media and political action has been roughly divided into idealists ("Social tools help people collaborate in general, so they will help insurgents in particular") and the realists ("It's never happened in an autocracy, but it's failed many times.") That conversation changed on January 14th, when Tunisian insurgents used those tools to help coordinate the ouster of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. That and subsequent events in the region make the idealist position more realistic, and the realist position less so. Given that change, what can we understand about the effects social media did and didn't have in the pro-democratic uprisings, and what, if anything, can we do to help?

The 90 Minute Solution: Live Like a Sprinter
78 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom D
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  Tony Schwartz
event::about  Are you forever struggling to juggle more demands and get more done? That's not about to change any time soon. Demand is rising inexorably. Here's the problem: we're not meant to run like computers -- at high speeds, continuously, for long periods of time. Rather, human beings are designed to pulse rhythmically between spending energy and intermittently renewing it. The sad truth is that most of us don't do either one very well. We may dimly recognize that we're more efficient and effective when we focus on one thing at a time, but we still react, with Pavlovian predictability, to every new call on our attention. We know, too, that we work too many hours and sleep too few, but we underestimate the costs. In fact, sleep is more important than food, and our bodies crave renewal and recovery during the day every 90 minutes. Instead, we override these signals with caffeine, sugar and by fueling ourselves with our own stress hormones, diminishing our capacity and our productivity over time. Tony Schwartz, bestselling author of Be Excellent at Anything: The Four Keys to Transforming the Way We Work and Live, will lay out a step-by-step approach to a better way of working, grounded in multidisciplinary research and real-life stories from his work with organizations such as Google, Apple, the LAPD and Sony Pictures. Take one hour to immerse yourself in the new paradigm Tony lays out – including a series of strategies you can instantly apply -- and you’ll never work the same way again.

The last decade was the decade of social. The coming one will be the decade of games. Over the past years, a few key companies have built, and now maintain, a powerful framework to foster digital connections between our friends, family and colleagues. What comes next is another framework, not another social layer, but a "game layer". And it'll be even bigger. Instead of trading in social connections, the game layer traffics directly in human motivation. It's not about the number of followers you have, or how many people "like" you, but about how you can leverage game mechanics to achieve all sorts of great things. Use them cleverly and they can enhance education, empower local businesses and make your life more fun and more rewarding. Use them incorrectly and well... it's less good. Join Seth Priebatsch, Chief Ninja of SCVNGR, for a deep dive into the coming game layer, what to be excited about, what to fear and why your life is about to become a lot more fun.

Welcome to the EGOsystem: How Much are You Worth?
10 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom D
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  What's your klout score? How many people follow you on Twitter? What’s your authority on Peerindex? How are peers rating you on Honestly? What’s your rank in Quora? The answers all equate to a market harbinger that’s both alarming and telling, how much is your digital persona worth in today’s social economy… If Google ranks the quality of web pages using PageRank, new services such as Klout and PeerIndex are developing a human algorithm that could best be described as PeopleRank. Whether you like or not, we live in a social hierarchy where your every move is indexed and calculated into a score that represents your stature in a digital society. Complain all you want, but the truth is that you’re already categorized into one of two groups, the have or have nots. For those who are among the fortunate, they are sought after by brands and other personalities to reward them for their social mastery. They become the new @CharlieSheen. They’re winners! As we see with new media talent agencies such as Ad.ly (the company that got Charlie on Twitter), celebs such as Kim Kardashian, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Paris Hilton, as well as the new era of web celebs and the Internet Famous are cashing in on their fame in new media channels. Twitter is the new vehicle for celebrity endorsements and as a result, Tweets are worth money and brands are lining up. And here’s the crazy part, they’re working and followers love them. But the opportunities you earn in the social web are just as important as the opportunities you will never see. Our avatars carry a number, a value and to the outside world that is our credit score, it is our net worth, it is a representation of our level of influence or lack thereof. But what the hell is influence anyway and why did I not have an opportunity to opt out of any of this? And, if you had the option, would you opt out? At this very moment, influence is harboring feelings of either recognition or resentment. It is what it is. So the question is, what are you going to do about it? Will it inspire you to push back or does it evoke aspiration and focus to change how you engage in social networks to improve your score. P.S. -- It’s now a tradition, three years in a row, three books debuted at SXSW. Brian will also take a moment to talk about his new book Engage: Revised and Updated.

Radical Openness: Growing TED by Giving it Away
94 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom D
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  June Cohen
event::about  Over the last four years, TED has evolved from a 1,000-person conference to something much larger ... TED Talks have been viewed more than 400 million times worldwide, and are available in 80 languages, thanks to volunteer translators. And over the last two years, more than 1000 independently organized "TEDx" events have been held worldwide, in 100 countries and 50 languages. What's enabled this growth? The cross-cultural, cross-generational appeal of TED's mission ("Ideas worth spreading") and also the philosophy of "radical openness" that's underscores all of TED's initiatives. From the conference to the code, TED has been opening itself up for participation, and this has had a profoundly positive effect on its mission, its scale, and its bottom line. In this presentation, we'll share the details of how TED has opened up, and what this has meant from both a business perspective, a content perspective and a technology perspective. We'll also take a look ahead, with some you-heard-it-first-at-SXSW news.

Designing Ideas, Not Objects

event::about  More that ever, the design of things is driving change into markets, and defining the idea of what a company means to its constitueants. Today, you can’t just create something, make and deliver it, and then expect it do well. Products must be more than just a “thing”. They need to built off relevant ideas, and the story needs to be driven throughout the entire proposition in an authentic way. Though observations and work examples, designer RobertBrunner will talk about why the notion of "ideas, not objects" is so important now, and how he and his company have created products that embody this principle. Highlighted will be his work for Barnes and Noble, Polaroid, Fuego, and Beats by Dr. Dre.

Flexible Morality of User Engagement & User Behavior
88 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom D
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  This session, proposed by Dan Ariely and Sarah Szalavitz, will investigate the relationship between morality and user engagement online, as well as in real life. Prior to the presentation, we will ask friends and the SXSW community to participate in an experiment to explore how the choices we are offered by user experiences and online communities "game" the outcome--or whether we are making choices at all, if our brains can't resist seeking Mayorships on FourSquare or growing farms on Farmville. During the session, we'll first offer the survey to attendees, share our findings from the results we already have, and then explore the implications for online behavior, user experience, and morality. We'll consider how cognitively irresistible user experiences are created, as well as its on both our online and offline identities. Further, we'll explore how the predetermination of user behavior by choice optimization and social design, can encourage cheating, both by users and designers. Finally, we'll look at the impact the flexibility of our morality in our various identities and behaviors could have on the future of the choices we'll both offer and be offered.

In this visionary talk, Blake Mycoskie shows you how to succeed in a new era of relentless competition and heightened social awareness. Why is philanthropy your best competitive advantage? How do you make money and do good simultaneously? How are the two acts intertwined? At TOMS -- a self-sustaining, for-profit company -- the act of giving is the cornerstone of its business model, integral to its financial success. In a behind-the-scenes look at how it all works, Mycoskie shares counterintuitive ideas ("In tough times, give more!") that you can apply to your own business. His bold, winning strategies are proven, and have been talked about by Bill Clinton, the Obama administration, and the hundreds of thousands of customers that have joined the TOMS Movement by buying a pair of shoes. Inspired, inspiring and most of all practical, Mycoskie presents a new direction for business, offering TOMS as his prime case study. After hearing him speak, you too will know why giving just makes sense.
