Speaker  Violet Blue
event::about  What they say about geeks, sex, relationships and hooking up just isn't true: we ARE hot and nerdy, and when it comes to events like SXSWi we could all use a little "booty call boot camp". Anyone can read sex ed basics online, but when you're faced with real-life situations and the nuances of quirky geeks who are smarter than the average hottie, and have that irresistible OCD, you'll need to know more than how to Google a pickup line or navigate a smooth SXSWi afterparty fling. In this talk, leading sex educator Violet Blue explains: * Sexual health basics, including safer sex 101. * Exactly how to have a smooth negotiation about safer sex. * Rules and tips for geek flirting. * Do's and Don'ts of picking up on geeks. * Sex etiquette and social media. * How to have a great one-nighter and feel happy saying hi in the halls the next day. * Navigating honesty (and health issues) when someone is cheating. * Consent: saying yes and no to sex with clarity and coolness. * How to have a hot time without pissing off your hotel roommates. * Why geeks are better lovers, and how to attract a geek. * Geek-specific suggestions for seeing each other after SXSW. While heterosexually focused in scope, this presentation will be inclusive of all genders and orientations. Includes a handout of recommendations for a Geek Sexual Survival Kit.

Motion Paintings, Visual Storytelling and Deaf Film
9 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 15
eventtype  Panel, Film
Speaker  Robyn Girard
event::about  Visual storytelling is an essential component of what it means to be part of the Deaf culture- without it; there would be no culture. As part of this presentation, we will explore a purely visual world through the juxtaposition of film, visual language, Deaf culture and vivid imagery. We will navigate Deaf film history, media stereotypes, visual storytelling, and discuss an ongoing project that functions as a portal, transporting viewers into a world that is often experienced through a visual, Deaf-based perspective. Instead of relying solely on invisible languages encoded in audio wavelengths, we communicate using a formal system of visual and tactile signs; through physical gestures, written languages, facial expressions and body language; through nuances, subtleties and exaggerations. Our thoughts are cinematic in the fullest sense possible. They are animated; they swim through the air. We illustrate stories. We paint with our fingers. Our “motion paintings” define the Deaf experience. An anthology of short stories that identify, magnify and dissect elements of the deaf experience, “101 Things that Unite and Divide” strips Deaf culture of its otherworld-ness by introducing audiences to our motion paintings. For SXSW participants, the Deaf world will no longer be a strange, humming world of flying fingers or visual noise; it will become an accessible, vivid, pulsating world in itself, larger than life.

The Last Broadcast: Entertainment is Social - What's Next?
47 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 18ABCD
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  Once upon a time there was traditional entertainment. And there was the Internet. Traditional entertainment was aimed at pleasing the masses with neutral programming, or incendiary programming if it was a sweeps week. The Internet was shaped by the masses creating their own content – a heavy use of irony captured on shaky flip cams. Until recently, they stayed in their respective corners, occasionally duking it out over rights and ownership. As new technologies are introduced and our devices are getting smarter, more mobile, television and the Internet need to play nice. So what will come of this new allegiance? Will television and movies shift their focus to user-created content? Will LA executives check Twitalyzer before Nielsen? Will the Internet be able to maintain its Wild West ways or will content creators need to act more like Hollywood moguls with legions of lawyers and lunch meetings? And most importantly how can the rest of us take advantage of the burgeoning opportunities of this new media landscape? This panel will be a discussion of the future of new media and entertainment by top-thinkers in all affected industries, from computer chip makers to the guy selling TV’s to regular folks. Each panelist will bring real-world examples and a vision of the future of entertainment.

Makers of Geek Documentaries: A Nerd’s Life
28 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 15
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  Nerd subcultures are becoming a popular subject for documentaries: they’re filled with fascinating characters, surprising behaviors and worlds that make the mundane seem exotic. And yet we all have that inner geek that can relate on some level. Documentary filmmakers tend to choose subjects because they’re fond of them. Sometimes though, in an attempt to make the films more accessible to a general audience, there’s a temptation to mock that which is unfamiliar and strange. What is the filmmaker’s responsibility to the people who have consented to allow us to explore and expose every aspect of their life, work, or play? And do they also have a responsibility not to make their films a “love letter” to the subjects? A panel of filmmakers who have focused their work on geeky subcultures will discuss the challenges and rewards of making documentaries about the untold triumphs of geekdom. They’ll discuss how they approached the material, the people, and the choices they made. And maybe we’ll even have a special guest or two.

Location Austin Convention Center, Room 16AB

As a movement transmedia has attracted significant interest in publishing, advertising, interactive and film. Most major publishers now have Transmedia divisions. Most large advertising agencies are developing Transmedia campaigns for clients. Game developers were into Transmedia before most people and video games are now routinely becoming films. In the film world, the Directors Guild of America has now officially designated "Transmedia Producer" as a viable credit line. All very well. But will the investment in Transmedia reap big rewards for the Entertainment Industry? Will it stem a seemingly inevitable decline in audience and revenue? Watching Windows: Constructing Your DIY Distribution
1 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 15
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  Historically the rule of thumb was that it should take about 7 years for a film to transition from theatrical release to free television as it slowly moved through its “windows.” Today those same windows have dramatically collapsed; they can be 7 months or even shorter. What happened and why? Is this good for independent film? Whether you’re a filmmaker, producer, sales rep, or consumer you need to understand windows. The Watching Windows panel will explore, define, and elaborate on windows as they relate to a film’s financial success and audience reach. You’ll hear from industry experts who understand filmmakers’ desires and guide them through distribution realities. The panel will discuss distribution strategies whether they be DIY or more traditional “all rights deals.” They will examine transactional VOD and free or ad-sponsored VOD and offer suggestions on how to exploit both. They will discuss efficient and effective marketing campaigns as they relate to the different windows. Collectively the panel has released over 1000 films over the last 4 years and will candidly share their experiences with the audience.

Emotional-Response Cinema...Plug In And Go Deep?
14 schedule::attendees
Location Alamo Ritz 2
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  The next generation of digital media interaction will use a direct emotional interface as the key new channel of communication. Extensive research and development on physiology, emotion and interaction is creating an entirely new level of engagement through technology. Driven by the desire of the movie studios to bring people back to the cinemas, investment in new media technologies such as 3D is exploding. In parallel, game manufacturers are also focusing on novel interfaces and interaction such as the Wii controller and Kinect. The fundamental business opportunity is to capitalize on this requirement for new media interfaces by providing an entirely new and different mode of interaction - individual and group emotional state controlling the content narrative. We will begin by wiring a selection of audience members up for the World Premiere of our Emotional Response Cinema project ‘Biosuite’ and then screen our short horror film ‘Unsound’. The audience arrives; We wire up a number of the audience, connected to our setup; We explain some background information on the project; Screen the film, whilst recording data from the wired-up audience members, which in turn determines the audio & visual experience; Display the results; Discuss a range of topics; The project and other variations; The genres and the various responses you could expect; The ethics; The research to date; The possible future opportunities for affective computing & moving image production.

Transmedia Storytelling: Constructing Compelling Characters and Narrative Threads
44 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 18ABCD
eventtype  Panel, Film
Speaker  Barbara Vance
event::about  Transmedia storytelling is increasingly being seen as the future of entertainment. A film is no longer just a film; its narrative extends to games, books, online documents, Internet videos, mobile applications, and beyond. But at the foundation of these new storytelling methods are certain narrative traditions that have held up over the centuries. Without a clear understanding of these structures and methods of character development, a narrative will struggle to survive. We must, therefore, look beyond the Matrix, going back instead to the Greeks, whose myths provide some of the first examples of genuine transmedia. These ancient tales crisscrossed through a complex web of drama, poetry, ritual, role playing, and oral recitation, utilizing archetypes that are still the foundation of stories today. In this panel, I will address key archetypes and plot formations found repeatedly in both historical narratives as well as recent successful transmedia franchises. I will discuss how to asses an audience, then strategically choose specific plot lines and characters for specific mediums based on those audience segments. We will look at: 1. Making sure your narrative has a solid premise on which to build – without a foundation you cannot lay bricks. 2. Key characteristics of appeal characters – how to have bad heroes and good villains 3. How to structure the story in an appropriate narrative thread 4. Choosing mediums and messages Spoken of here, transmedia narratives are not adaptations; they are extensions, networks composed not as afterthoughts to an “original” creative work, but conceived instead in conjunction with them, with thought given to the story, the medium, the audience, and how these elements relate to a cohesive fictional world.

Evolving Cinematic Storytelling to Span Multiple Screens
29 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 15
eventtype  Panel, Film
Speaker  Jason Brush
event::about  Marshall McLuhan’s famous adage, “the medium is the message,” is as true as ever, with evolving technologies — Web video, DSLR cameras, smart phones, smart TVs, and tablets — affecting the way in which filmed media is created and distributed. However, filmmakers are more often than not still bound by old paradigms — the feature film, the hour-long TV drama, the short — which struggle to fit into (and be sustainable within) a rapidly evolving media ecosystem. We will explore the creative opportunities for filmmakers to expand the language of their filmmaking beyond the comfortable and familiar boundaries of old formats, and investigate how a filmmaker’s vision can scale to create experiences beyond the theater and beyond the television. This talk asks the question, is it possible to create holistic cinematic experiences that span the many screens in our lives? What new messages will be enabled by today's new mediums?

Branded Documentary: A Case Study, Concept to Cannes
37 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 16AB
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  Marketers and filmmakers take note: branded film content is on the rise. As consumers sidestep traditional advertising, brands must connect with them in new ways. Many have begun to purvey magnetic content of their own -- often by telling real stories about the lives they change. Some of their richest content and biggest successes are coming from their work with documentary filmmakers, who are finding a new sustainability of their own through this meaningful commissioned work. But how do these projects happen? How is branded content best leveraged? And does it actually deliver? A Fortune 100 company recently commissioned Flow Nonfiction to create a branded documentary film surrounding a partnership with a non-profit; the concrete results for the brand were stunning. This panel's case study illuminates the trend, with a 360 view from the stakeholders and collaborators who made it happen, and a discussion of best practices for all players in this cresting niche.

17 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 16AB

event::about  The film industry can be a difficult business to navigate, you can go to film school to prepare for it, but how far does that go? Hear from a number of recent graduates of various schools who are making a living within the industry about how different life in the industry is from life in film school. Panelists will describe where their education left off and what they've had to learn the hard way. We’ll be looking at how to make the transition from the world of academia to the film world. Discussion will include the place of short films to making your first feature (micro or indie budget) and realistic goals for those films. We’ll talk about how panelist’s goals have changed over the years in light of lessons learned and changing perspectives on the industry. The panel will include reflections on life decisions, and what they wish they knew at various stages in their careers, for instance, before they went to film school and before moving to NY/LA. This is a focus on the points of entry into the business side of the industry, including a general overview and a look into the role of agencies, festivals and networking.

8 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 15
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  Bismarck said "People who like laws and sausages shouldn't like either being made." So it is with film journalism and criticism in our modern age -- whether in newspapers struggling to adapt to seemingly declining readership or on-line outlets struggling to adapt to seemingly declining I.Q.'s. 'Inside the Sausage Factory' will have professionals sharing their worst-case scenarios stories of covering the world of film -- what they can't seem to interest superiors in, what they can't seem to interest audiences in, the tragedy of the listicle and the triumph of a well-done piece, the depression of the 'Comments" section and the elation of getting it right. 'Inside the Sausage Factory' will present a broad spectrum of professional experience -- Newspaper journalists, Alt-weekly staff, hustling freelancers, personality-driven iconoclasts -- to look at precisely how wildly differing film coverage is fragmenting in the modern world, and at what challenges all professional film writers face regardless of outlet or audience.

Live Digital Streaming: The Split Screen Experience
11 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 18ABCD
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  Potential viewers and fans of live event television programs like the "American Music Awards" are surrounded by computers, mobile technology and 'alternative' entertainment. In order to keep viewers engaged on your programming you need to take the content live with online companion coverage where people can directly and immediately interact, stay put, and tune-in to a TV show or special. Important factors like innovation, creative programming, talent interaction, and social media applications drive viewers to tune in while interact online. This is what is now being called the "split screen experience." For example: In 2009, dick clark productions and Ustream set not only digital viewing records with the American Music Awards pre-telecast and red carpet specials, but traditional broadcast ratings were up year-to-year again showing an important correlation. The American Music Awards red carpet pre-show garnered 3.5MM live viewers, 2.3MM uniques and established a record for the most-watched live digital red carpet event. Topics for discussion to include: Companion coverage; Audience viewing patterns; Live digital streaming with major network TV shows; Roles of social media; Technical aspects of producing live streams; Organic marketing and engagement; Creative ways to leverage the online coverage to generate revenue; Incorporating sponsors and brands into digital programming; Live interaction via social media applications.

Neither Moguls nor Pirates: Grey Area Music Distribution
12 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 18ABCD
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  The debate surrounding music piracy versus the so-called collapse of the music industry has largely been bipolar, and yet so many other processes of music distribution have been developing. From online “sharity” communities that digitize obscure vinyl never released in digital format (a network of cultural preservation, one could argue), all the way to netlabels that could not care less about making money out of their releases, as well as “grime” networks made up of bedroom musicians constantly remixing each other, there is a vast wealth of possibilities driving music in the digital world. This panel will present key examples emerging from this “grey area”, and discuss future scenarios for music production and consumption that stand proudly outside the bipolar box.

Can P2P Save Filmmaking?
9 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 15
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  There is a lot of talk about what the Internet (and P2P in particular) means for the future of filmmaking. A story that often goes untold is the empowerment provided by the Internet to indie filmmakers. According to Ted Hope, producer of 21 Grams and Adventureland, just four percent of the independent films made in the U.S. annually get traditional distribution. The Internet has created opportunities for filmmakers who are interested in making quality entertainment for large audiences outside the traditional media business model. At a time when the Internet has essentially driven media distribution costs to zero, distributed networks like BitTorrent provide an effective and flexible way for filmmakers to distribute their content. Moreover, it allows filmmakers to tap into online communities and reach millions of people who might otherwise be inaccessible. These communities are powerful and provide intrinsic value for an indie filmmaker trying to build a fan base. Increasingly we are witnessing creative new approaches where making money from rich media will not rely so heavily on holding media under lock and key. Filmmakers are developing business models that address the digital native generation with a coherent and authentic proposition that takes advantage of all the strengths of the Internet.

Documentary Deities: Dispelling The Director Myth
14 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 16AB
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  Filmmaking is a team effort, and none more so than the documentary. Most documentaries are made by a core team of multiple hat-wearing collaborators all drawn to the medium specifically because it allows for a 'roll up the sleeves,' hands-on approach to craft, strategy and storytelling at the most intimate levels for a long period of time. Despite this reality, and in light of a much more sophisticated, user-driven media landscape, The Director as all-powerful God perpetuates as a convenient myth for traditional and nontraditional press and audiences to buy into - often to the detriment of their own ability to understand (or even create) such works. This panel, hosted by Oscar nominated documentary filmmaker and IDA Board President Eddie Schmidt, and featuring top documentary producers, editors and DP's responsible for Academy and Emmy nominated projects, pulls the curtain away from their renowned projects to reveal the true team efforts that make these films so great and the documentary art so unique. Unlike big-budget Hollywood, no one person's job is to stand around and fetch coffee for the star on a documentary set. This will be a dynamic, possibly even controversial, first-person look into how the nonfiction sausage gets made. However, the goal is not dirty laundry but rather media literacy: to educate an industry and an audience who ought to know better and will benefit from doing so.

Love, Music, & APIs
6 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 18ABCD
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  In the old days it was DJs, A&R folks, labels and record store owners that were the gatekeepers to music. Today, we are seeing a new music gatekeeper emerge... the developer. Using open APIs, developers are creating new apps that change how people explore, discover, create and interact with music. But developers can't do it alone. They need data like gig listings, lyrics, recommendation tools and, of course, music! And they need it from reliable, structured and legitimate sources. In this presentation we'll discuss and explore what is happening right now in the thriving music developer ecosystem. We'll describe some of the novel APIs that are making this happen and what sort of building blocks are being put into place from a variety of different sources. We'll demonstrate how companies within this ecosystem are working closely together in a spirit of co-operation. Each providing their own pieces to an expanding pool of resources from which developers can play, develop and create new music apps across different mediums - web, mobile, software and hardware. We'll highlight some of the next-generation of music apps that are being created in this thriving ecosystem. Finally we'll take a look at how music developers are coming together at events like Music Hack Day, where participants have just 24 hours to build the next generation of music apps. Someone once said, "APIs are the sex organs of software. Data is the DNA." If this is true, then Music Hack Days are orgies.

The Female Funny: Is It Different For Girls?
35 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 16AB
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  Are men funnier than women? That question is one of the stupider distractions to derail female writers, actors, directors and filmmakers in recent years, because it puts women on the defensive and forces them to "prove" they are funny/write funny/know funny/can make funny. Within the wider challenges of the film industry, this has set up different challenges for women in getting specifically comedic film projects off the ground, from script to directing to funny roles for women to the practicalities of getting funded. Is it because, as NYT film critic Manolha Dargis has said, "It's all guys making deals with other guys?" Is it that women are hidden behind-the-scenes, as was debated in the "Daily Show vs. Jezebel" controversy? Are things changing thanks to trailblazers like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Kristen Wiig? How present are women in the surging Judd Apatow/Jonah Hill/Paul Rudd/David Wain canons - as stars, or supporting roles? And is it harder to get to the audience before the audience - the gatekeepers of the industry (and it's money) - who are those gatekeepers, what does their gender tend to be, and is there a humor divide? Or is funny funny, and can women make dick jokes as well as any guy? Finally, consider this comment: "It is incredibly difficult to find beautiful, talented, funny women over 35.” Every heard that about a dude? That was said by Colette Burson, co-creator of Hung. There's probably a dick joke in there.

This panel will examine what it takes to stay honest in a digital world, from disclosure of sponsorships to a constant effort to remain separate from studios.

Did You Kill Anyone? Reality in War Movies
7 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 16AB
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  Civilians haven’t experienced what is like for our service members abroad, and fictional accounts of the war haven’t been effective in changing the perceptions of the American public. With Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington’s ‘Restrepo’, they have created a film that answers the question of “What was it like over there?” in a way that no other film has been able to do. ‘Restrepo’ chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley. The documentary focuses on a remote 15-man outpost called Restrepo. Filmmakers Hetherington and Junger dug in with the men of Second Platoon, making a total of ten trips to the Korengal between June 2007 and July 2008. Together with Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, National Geographic is using ‘Restrepo’ to encourage the dialogue that this film fosters between veterans who have experienced combat and the general public. In this panel, we’ll explore the ways in which a film can change the lives of the troops featured, the service members that go see the film, and the civilians that are exposed for the first time to real combat in Afghanistan. We’ll discuss the ways in which ‘Restrepo’ is connecting veterans within their communities, and already helping to ease the transition home for many. IAVA will also discuss what Hetherington and Junger did right in ‘Restrepo’ and what so many other filmmakers have gotten wrong in their depictions of our current conflicts.

Music & Metadata: Do Songs Remain The Same?
23 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 18ABCD
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  Metadata may be an afterthought when it comes to most people's digital music collections, but when it comes to finding, buying, selling, rating, sharing, or describing music, little matters more. Metadata defines how we interact and talk about music—from discreet bits like titles, styles, artists, genres to its broader context and history. Metadata builds communities and industries, from the local fan base to the online social network. Its value is immense. But who owns it? Some sources are open, peer-produced and free. Others are proprietary and come with a hefty fee. And who determines its accuracy? From CDDB to MusicBrainz and Music Genome Project to AllMusic, our panel will explore the importance of metadata and information about music from three angles. First, production, where we'll talk about the quality and accuracy of peer-produced sources for metatdata and music information, like MusicBrainz and Wikipedia, versus proprietary sources, like CDDB. Second, we'll look at the social importance of music data, like how we use it to discuss music and how we tag it to enhance music description and discovery. Finally, we'll look at some legal issues, specifically how patent, copyright, and click-through agreements affect portability and ownership of data and how metadata plays into or out of the battles over "walled garden" systems like Facebook and Apple's iEmpire. We'll also play a meta-game with metadata during the panel to demonstrate how it works and why it is important.

23 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 15

event::about  As pervasive as the Internet has become, so has the notion that free content must be free for others to take. Plagiarism proves a constant issue, although a quick use of Google can spot offenders about as easily as it helps them, and bloggers find the concept of their “exclusives” rendered null and void almost instantly. How dumb must some be to take what isn’t theirs? How smart must others be to avoid merely regurgitating the latest press release? How heavily should we allow access to dictate content? How well are we serving an audience if it’s easier to put a question mark in the headline instead of making an honest-to-goodness phone call or two? How long can we wait to break news, and how much sourcing do we owe our readers? With the right combination of participants, I promise you that, while we may not be able to answer of these questions definitively, it'll make for a heated and humorous discussion as to what our news and opinions are truly worth at this moment* in our field. (*well, THAT moment in March; I can't imagine things will be much different by then).

Beyond 3D: How Interactive Screenings Will Save Cinema
13 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 16AB
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  With each advent of new technology, pundits (and now bloggers) like to speculate on how long the theatrical experience of movie viewing can survive. With the growth of cinema eateries, larger IMAX-inspired screens in local multiplexes, and 3D tent pole productions, it seems that every chain is struggling to stay one step ahead of the also improving home theater technology. But how long can technology alone help the struggling theater industry? There's a growing movement spreading around the world of people who realize that the size of the screen isn't the most important aspect, it's the involvement of the audience. What started as campy enjoyment of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at midnight showings has grown into a love affair with interactive viewing experiences of all types of features. From traditional Sing-Alongs of musical movies to Quote-Alongs of beloved classics like The Princess Bride, interactive theatrical experiences are ramping up like never before. In the summer of 2010 Paramount Pictures joined in on the action by rereleasing Grease theatrically across the US. With the major studios playing in the pond traditionally occupied by fans and improv troupes, what does the future hold for interactive screenings, and will it be enough to save the tradition of hundreds of people gathering in the same room to watch flickering images projected on a screen?

Heard But Not Seen: Capturing Music History Cinematically
13 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 15

event::about  Music films have an advantage of always having a natural climax. Poor/gifted/unexpected person or band possesses life-changing talents; may or may not become famous and may or may not hold on to fame. It's either an uplifting tale or a tragedy worth telling. No matter which ending, music films, both documentaries and biographical pictures, have grown wildly popular among audiences and filmmakers in recent years. This panel will explore how music of the 20th century is best captured cinematically: which storytelling vehicles are producers and directors using to best establish the historical record on film. We'll discuss a number of recent pictures that try to shake up the form of the music film. These include films as diverse as 'When You're Strange', the recent paean to The Doors that eschews recollections for living in the moment of the '60s through found footage, and 'This Movie is Broken', which tries to interweave a fictional tale with the music of the band Broken Social Scene. We'll analyze whether music films evolving as their own unique filmmaking niche and discuss challenges common to using popular music in films. We'll discuss new venues of distribution for music films that diverge from the old models. And we'll ponder the most innovative uses of telling music history stories on film and what to expect in the upcoming years.

The Reel Murder panel, which will be comprised of the leading voices in true crime writing, feature filmmaking, and documentary filmmaking, will guide the audience member from the crime scene to the big screen. Some topics of discussion will include: Why are certain crimes considered big screen-worthy while others are not? What are the inevitable legal pitfalls involved in turning a true crime story into a movie? How can filmmakers empathize with survivors of victims without losing the visceral impact of the story? How can filmmakers deal with protests from the morality police, as well as those genuinely troubled by the subject matter? 4 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom D Foyer
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  Filmmaker and artist Philip H. Anselmo will be appearing at the SX Bookstore to greet fans and sign copies of his various works. Philip Anselmo remains a pillar of heavy metal and underground culture. His career has spanned over two decades, and he's fronted some of the most crucial acts in the genre's history. In Pantera, the singer helped craft an undeniable sound that roars immortally. That sound reverberates across the metal juggernaut's multi-platinum selling catalog, including five classic studio albums—Cowboys From Hell [1990], Vulgar Display of Power [1992], Far Beyond Driven [1994], The Great Southern Trendkill [1996] and Reinventing the Steel [2000]. That sound made Far Beyond Driven the heaviest album to ever debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200. That sound brought the world to its feet on endless sold out tours. That sound garnered four Grammy nominations and other numerous accolades. That sound forged one of the most diehard fan bases ever and influenced countless young acts along the way. Wielding a heavy dose of southern groove and classic rock gusto, Anselmo shined equally with his platinum super group Down on Nola [1995], Down II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow [2002] and Down III: Over the Under [2007]. Simultaneously, he brandished an unbridled hardcore intensity on two albums with Superjoint Ritual. Amidst all of this, he founded Housecore Records, the home of haarp, The Sursiks, Warbeast and his very own Christ Inversion, Arson Anthem, his solo project and more. Housecore embodies Anselmo's natural creative ethos, and it sees him producing and pushing boundaries as an independent industry visionary. Of course, there's a lot more to the man behind the music. In addition to being a board member of boxing figurehead Emanuel Steward's Kronk Gym Foundation, Anselmo is a published author in Boxing Digest and on BoxingInsider.com. His passions for boxing, horror films, and professional football are just as loud as any of the vocals he's committed to tape. With his first genre-smashing solo record on the way in 2011, he's only getting louder. Philip is a panelist for REEL MURDER: From Crime Scene to Big Screen where he will discuss his participation as the composer and financier of one of the most notorious, brutal, and critically acclaimed true crime films of all time, Jim Van Bebber's THE MANSON FAMILY.

There’s also an inclusion of a majestic summer flourish of romantic indie-pop very much in the modern tradition – similar to Beach House, Vampire Weekend or Wolf Parade. Emerging initially as the more folky end of Oxford’s burgeoning match rock scene that brought us (close friends of Jonquil and recent touring partners) Foals and Youthmovies, Jonquil have constantly evolved and morphed into a very accomplished and mature band with a now newly focused, fresh output of work.

Next Stage Presents The Boxer Rebellion (acoustic)
12 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Exhibit Hall 3-4
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  Join The Boxer Rebellion on Next Stage for a special acoustic performance you won’t see anywhere else! “What’s past is prologue…” With all that’s befallen them, London-based quartet The Boxer Rebellion have a history that reads like a grand, intricately woven design. For a band who have been together almost ten years – during which their first (and, to date, only) label went bust shortly after their debut release and a key member had a near-death experience – such fluctuating fortunes would surely see most bands imploding in frustration. So what marks The Boxer Rebellion out from the rest? How have they endured in relative obscurity, held down day jobs to self-release a follow-up, and arrived at a kind of renaissance so far down a jagged career path? Well, one could point to the quality of the songs or the almost wanton uniqueness of their sound, but that would be remiss – they’ve always had the talent. Perhaps it could be faith in their own abilities – a bloody-mindedness that refused to go away? Not so – every band that has ever existed (or not) tends to think they’re the reincarnation of The Beatles. The simple fact is, the reason The Boxer Rebellion have endured thus far resides in a single word, a concept that was the insignia of their second album: Union. “We’ve always been a band that’s had a sense of seclusion, which has helped us extract the essence of what we are as a unit,” guitarist Todd Howe reveals of their working process, a point succinctly and wryly punctuated by frontman Nathan Nicholson: “I think if we were solo artists, we’d have all quit by now.” It’s this sense of alliance that has allowed The Boxer Rebellion to navigate a path beset with industry indifference and financial hardship to forge a career that has set industry landmarks from the base materials of undeniable talent and a cast-iron will. One such landmark came in the band’s recent live appearance on the silver screen in Going The Distance, a Hollywood feature film starring Drew Barrymore. In the movie, the band play themselves and effectively superimpose their name into the popcorn-chomping eyes of movie-going audiences throughout the world – performing two tracks from the Union LP (‘Evacuate’ and ‘Spitting Fire’) while also providing an original song, ‘If You Run’, for the film’s finale. All this on the back of a chance encounter with film industry spotters at a showcase in LA, who were so impressed with the band’s sold-out performance at The Troubadour, they promptly nudged the film’s director, Nanette Burstein, to make them the movie’s musical focal point. Since then, the band have found themselves attending red-carpet premieres in Los Angeles and London (in a location literally around the corner from where two of the band used to work in a shoe shop), before launching into a packed-out 20-date US tour in September 2010. Having self-released and virtually self-financed the follow-up to debut Exits, the band’s Union LP saw them make history by becoming the first unsigned band to enter the US Billboard 100 Albums Chart (no. 82) on digital sales alone. By the end of 2009, iTunes US declared Union their Alternative Album of the Year. A fitting climax to a year of toil and tussle, after this The Boxer Rebellion were primed and ready to embark on their third studio record. Enter producer Ethan Johns (Kings of Leon, Ryan Adams, Ray LaMontagne), whose unorthodox approach to recording became the perfect foil to the Boxer Rebellion’s almost tunnel-vision creative perseverance. The result of this dynamic – and the first album The Boxer Rebellion have handed over to a single producer – is the forthcoming breathtaker that is The Cold Still, an album that might never have seen the light of day from a band of lesser conviction. They have taken the trials of their formative years and built themselves a future that glows from the resurgent embers of the determination that refused to be extinguished all those years ago, and burns ever brighter still. For The Boxer Rebellion, what’s past is their prologue. Here’s where their story truly begins…

Next Stage Presents Floating Action
7 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Exhibit Hall 3-4
eventtype  Panel, Film
event::about  Named after a vintage Gretsch bass drum pedal, Floating Action is the pseudonym of Black Mountain, North Carolina-based musician, songwriter, and producer Seth Kauffman. Following the 2007 homemade gem Research (released under his own name) and Floating Action’s gorgeously understated self-titled follow-up from 2009, Park the Van is proud to release Desert Etiquette, Kauffman’s third full-length with the New Orleans based indie label. Taking its title from a legend told to Kauffman by his sister (in the Middle East, it is proper etiquette to leave a drinking vessel for the hypothetical next traveler near a remote oasis) Desert Etiquette is the most stripped-down Floating Action affair to date. Aside from one pedal steel recording on the closing track, every song on Desert Etiquette was written, performed, produced, and recorded by Kauffman himself. His d.i.y. approach is the result of his insatiable searching; chasing the ultimate musical moment: “When an idea comes in directly from above, you can often capture it in it's pure state by eliminating the middle man. Sometimes bottling it at the source is just easier, and nothing gets lost in translation.” There’s no such thing as a “typical” Floating Action song. Folk, soul, southern-rock, gospel, surf, and bedroom lo-fi somehow coexist and cohere in the same record—even the same song. There is, however, a distinct Floating Action sound. Kauffman’s warm recordings and lushly anachronistic sound is uniquely his. The attentiveness given to production quality is palpable; you can all but hear the vinyl crackle in gently graceful tunes like “Please Reveal” or “Rincon.” Like Dr. Dog keyboardist Zach Miller said in a recent interview, “His songs are timeless, effortless, and instantly memorable.”

6 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Exhibit Hall 3-4

event::about  She weighs half as much as her keyboard but she could punch out your Dad. Yes, she is a female singer songwriter…but she’s not shy and retreating or cute. BUT: she’s not 10 tons of slut in a mini skirt and nipple tape belly dancing on a crucifix. She’s addicted to Facebook but not like your best friend Tenille. Her voice will stop you in your tracks. It brings grown men to tears on live television (seriously). It soars, then falters, then soars again and it is full off sorrow even when it is full of joy (soft, broken, soaring, sorrow, spitting, sneering, smiling etc etc etc). And she can dance. She grew up in Papua New Guinea so she is a wild girl that knows which tree has water in it’s trunk, but she speaks French and wears couture even though she can’t afford groceries. She made a record called “I Believe You Liar” and it’s not like other records. It’s better and it’s hard to tell why exactly. They’re all pop songs but not like you think. They are really, REALLY wordy twisty complicated key changing sons of bitches that you’d have to go to music school for 6 years to play (she did) but after they’re done you can remember every chorus and every hook, and on the second listen you may be able to sing back most of the words. They are mostly about love and how love can make you feel any other emotion. She calls them sonic polaroids. "Australia, you have a new and original troubadour to lift your spirits and warm your hearts.” -Tim Finn. She’s like a rock and roll band, but not. She’s kind of like Elvis Costello. She’s kind of like Cindy Lauper. She’s kind of like Motown stuff. She’s kind of like Phoenix. She’s kind of like Tom Waits. She’s like NEW like NEVER BEFORE but… …but not. Washington is the physical manifestation of all these seemingly diametrically opposed forces. Somehow these forces have not yet created a black hole that envelops the universe. They instead created songs and a voice that in one short year have put her in every Australian home on the cover of a magazine, or on the television, or round and round in your head when your taking a shower. It’s possessed musical royalty (and I won’t say exactly who but it’s pretty impressive) and anyone else you can think of. These folks pick up the phone and invite her for a drink but she’ll only come if they’re drinking Hendricks. She was Triple J Unearthed. She’s the Vanda and Young Song Writing Competition. She’s an APRA Ambassador. She’s already touring the US and the UK.
