36 schedule::attendees
Location Elysium
eventtype  Unofficial Party
event::about

Who: Entrepreneurs, startups, press, lurkers, and ambitious upstarts. How: Beer, awesome interviews and amazing people.   Details Think of it as the Mixergy you love...live and in person...with top interviewees...and drinks.   Making it possible Three people offered to sponsor the event and make it possible. Chris Savage, Wistia's founder, volunteered  to sponsor before I even knew where or when it'll take place. (Wistia is the video platform I use for all of Mixergy's videos. Try it and you'll see why.) Ben Welch-Bolen, CEO of Site5 Hosting, is a guy I personally asked over dinner to do a Mixergy interview but he refused because he's not ready to reveal how well Site5 is doing. (If you come, please help me persuade him.) Josh Kaufman is the author of Personal MBA, the Amazon.com Business Management Bestseller. After spending 5 minutes on the phone with him, I practically begged Josh to teach me. I think you'll want to grab his book. Todd Garland, the Founder of BuySellAds.com, bought my last sponsorship spot. How fitting! Did you know there's a page on his site where you can see how much ad money he generates for every one of the publishers in his network? Before you buy or sell an online ad, check this page out.   Credit where it's due The idea for this event wasn't mine. These two guys cooked it up and are helping me put it together. Noah Kagan - the founder of Killer Web Deals site, AppSumo.com and RewardLevel.com Damon Clinkscales - a software developer and community shepherd in Austin who is also a huge Mixergy fan. Content Rules
89 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom G
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  How does a company make the leap from “marketing-speak” to become a publisher on the Web? How do you know what to say? How can you create stories and videos and blog posts that people will love? How can you cultivate fans and spark devotion? How can your ideas ignite your business? How do you know if it’s working? Blogs, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and other online platforms are giving organizations like yours an enormous opportunity to engage directly with your customers. That’s a lucky thing: because instead of creating awareness about your company or your brand solely the old-school way (through annoying people with advertising, or bugging them with direct mail, or interrupting them with whatever), you now have an unprecedented and enormous opportunity. Authors C.C. Chapman & Ann Handley have now written the book on the topic called Content Rules. They will read from the book and discuss why content is so critical to everyone and anyone. More than just a book reading. A high energy, inspirational and helpful session to answer your questions about content.

Behind the Curtain: Secrets of Mobile Application Wizardry
95 schedule::attendees
Location Hilton, Salon J
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  Paul Gelb
event::about  A jaw dropping 80% of iPhone and Android apps have hardly any active users. Tens of thousands of developers and hundreds of thousands of mobile applications have gotten it wrong. But mobile apps done right can provide unprecedented value to users and rapid transformations of businesses. Gilt Groupe, USAA Bank and Pandora can attribute much of their recent success to their mobile applications. The biggest barrier to success? More is absolutely less. As Mark Twain famously said, “It would have been shorter if I had more time.” With seemingly infinite options of features, ‘what’ and ‘how much’ is the hardest part of development. This presentation will provide a detailed unbridled view into the strategy and creative process of creating a compelling, successful mobile app by finding the right balance between business objectives content, design, functionality, and concept.

Bloggers vs. Journalists: It's a Psychological Thing
85 schedule::attendees
Location Sheraton, Capitol A-D
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  I wrote my essay, Bloggers vs. Journalists is Over, in 2005. And it should be over. After all, lots of journalists happily blog, lots of bloggers journalize and everyone is trying to figure out what's sustainable online. But there's something else going on: these two Internet types, amateur bloggers and pro journalists, are actually each other's ideal "other." A big reason they keep struggling with each other lies at the level of psychology, not in the particulars of the disputes and flare-ups that we continue to see online. The relationship is essentially neurotic, on both sides. Bloggers can't let go of Big Daddy media— the towering figure of the MSM — and still be bloggers. Pro journalists, meanwhile, project fears about the Internet and loss of authority onto the figure of the pajama-wearing blogger. This is a construction of their own and a key part of a whole architecture of denial that has weakened in recent years, but far too slowly. The only way we can finally kill this meme--bloggers vs. journalists--and proceed into a brighter and pro-am future for interactive journalism is to go right at the psychological element in it: the denial, the projection, the neuroses, the narcissism, the grandiosity, the rage, the fears of annihilation: the monsters of the id in the newsroom, and the fantasy of toppling the MSM in the blogosphere. That is what my solo presentation will be about: a tale of the Internet, told through types. Lisa Williams will moderate and run the backchannel.

Customer Experience: Future Trends & Insights
103 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom G
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  Colin Shaw
event::about  To build a Social Media Experience that drives value, you must focus on addressing seven strategic questions. In this session Colin Shaw, author of 3 best-selling books on Customer Experience, reveals that over 50% of a Social Media Experience is about emotions, how a customer feels. Emotions are at the heart of driving human behavior, however most organizations ignore this fact. Organizations are too caught up in the rational aspects of the online experience rather than the emotional side. Colin will reveal ground- breaking research from his new book in Fall 2010: Customer Experience: Future Trends & Insights, which looks at Social Media as a key strategic trend. Colin also reveals the discovery of a subconscious experience that has a massive effect on a Social Media Experience. He will disclose new ground-breaking psychological research which has uncovered what drives or destroys value in a Social Media Experience. Finally he puts this all in the context of seven key strategic questions an organization needs to answer, and the specific actions they need to take to build a Social Media Experience (SMx) that drives value. You will learn: • Seven key strategic questions for building a great Social Media Experience (SMx) • How to design and build an emotionally engaging SMx • What Customers really want from a SMx • The attributes of a SMx that drive & destroy value • Explore case studies to learn from other organizations

Designing for Silence: Using Email for Good

Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom C

We can do better, though. We can create web apps that get more valuable, not less, when users don't visit every single day, and we can use email in more valuable ways to greater effect. This session will explore a few product and interaction design strategies to embrace this silence between your product and the user. We'll also look at how business models can adapt to value mindshare over visits, and how to surgically use email to it's best effect.

Social Media Data Visualization: Mapping the World's Conversations
146 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom B

event::about  As individuals and companies across the world rely more and more heavily on social media, data visualization has become sine qua non in not only displaying analytics and metrics, but also in understanding macro and micro trends by platform, network and individual. This panel will explore information design, data visualization, relationship mapping and statistics -- and how they all fit together to create compelling infographics, data visualizations and dynamic dashboards in hot pursuit of the holy grail of information design: make it more digestible and more human. Proposed by well-known data visualization firm JESS3 (see especially: The Conversation Prism and The State of the Internet), the panel will not only share insights into what makes a good infographic or social media data visualization, but also seek to explore the significance of these graphics in relation to the expanding reach and uses of social media as not just tellers of social media stories, but part of larger content-based communications strategies.

Online Dating 2.0: All Mobile, All Location-Based
41 schedule::attendees
Location Hilton, Salon J
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Online dating has, since its inception, been primarily about people sitting in front of their computers, endlessly composing and perusing (often highly contrived) profiles, hoping to find the right combination of words and flattering photos to lead them to true love. Location-based technology in mobile phones (both browser-based and apps) means that dating can make its way back to the streets. New services like MeetMoi and others put the dating back in digital dating, facilitating introductions to like-minded singles within a certain proximity. This panel will address: 1) what privacy concerns need to be taken into consideration when people begin meeting IRL through this technology? 2) Is a check-in based model, like Foursquare, or persistent-location, like Google Latitude, the best format for mobile dating? And 3) how do daters change the way they present themselves when their potential paramour may be right around the corner? Location-based dating is the future of online dating… and it’s about more than just hookups with the new technology that increases the “intent-to-date” among users. Now that people read books on their iPhone, keep their entire music library on their BlackBerry, and use their Android to house their entire family photo collection, why wouldn’t a mobile phone become a personal matchmaker extraordinaire?

Profiting in Adult: The Recession is Over
22 schedule::attendees
Location Hilton, Salon D

event::about  The last few years the adult online industry saw a perfect storm of the recession, content piracy, and lack of innovation that caused some companies to lose as much as 90% of their profit margins and several others to close up shop entirely. While many are still reeling and struggling to make ends meet, now that much of the smoke has cleared, who is left standing and why? Once considered recession-proof, the adult industry is starting to see a bounce back, with an influx of motivated, mature and organized individuals with startups.

Creation, Curation, and the Ethics of Content Strategy
90 schedule::attendees
Location Sheraton, Capitol View Terrace
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  From Monet to MTV, what practices connect the salons of Paris with Danger Mouse, NFL.com, and Facebook? More importantly, what's your place in that continuum? If you work with content, embrace your place in the ethical debate of creation and curation. It's nothing new—but it's time for user experience practitioners to acknowledge it. Why? Both companies' and consumers' expectations of user experience have matured, promoting content strategy in interactive teams, efficient projects, and satisfying user experiences. Content strategists shape communication goals, hierarchy, and taxonomy. Innocent choices? Or politics, discrimination, and the dark side of design? If you ignore these pitfalls of content strategy, what are the ethical implications? We'll discuss this through the lens of content correlation and "merchandising" on news sites, editing and mashing up to “create” anew, and curating in traditional settings like museums. From seemingly benign audits and style guidelines through published content packages, do curators create meaning? If so, how should content strategists confront similar choices? It's been a breakout year for content strategy. Come hear why now we need to confront its ethical relevance—and learn about the missteps of teams that don't—through the lens of case studies and the perspective of the new publishing landscape.

The SINGULARITY: Humanity's Huge Techno Challenge
25 schedule::attendees
Location Hilton Garden Inn, Sabine
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Will supercomputing intelligences outsmart human-level intelligence? Ray Kurzweil's "The Age of Spiritual Machines" is the world's most known advocacy of a technology breakthrough that will change the face of humanity and the entire world. Kurzweil claims that the accelerating, exponential growth of technology will result in such a Singularity. But not all technological luminaries agree with Kurzweil. In fact, some suggest nanotechnology as superseding artificial intelligence. Others argue for humanity's future as being located in biosynthetics and virtuality. Outside the technological sphere, a new culture of DIY citizen scientists could either speed up or halt the Singularity. With a finger on the pulse, ethicists and policy-makers are arguing for a new strategy for assessing our possible futures. This panel dissects the very core of the Singularity, if and when it will occur, and what we can expect to happen.

Steve Jobs and the Rise of the Techno-Priests

Location Austin Convention Center, Room 9ABC
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  Shane Kempton
event::about  “Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.” The quote from St. Augustine in the 4th century sounds surprisingly like Apple fanboy forum posts prior to the launch of the next magical “iSomething”. As technology continues to become more personal and more integrated with our lives, it’s begun to affect how we perceive our relationship to the world around us in ways that more closely resemble religion. Remember the panicky, out of body experience you had the last time you left your smartphone at home? With deepening integration, our tech changes the way we live and the makers of technology profoundly shape our society. We tend to think that these technologies are only tools, but they are becoming part our senses; they even affect our world view. That world view is being molded by the conveyors of our gadgets and apps as they define the way we interact with friends and family, choose what we can and cannot see, expand our access to ideas and even change the way we are able to think. Join me on this irreverent and hilarious romp through the past, present and future as we compare the fundamental ideologies’ of Apple, Google and Microsoft with historical religious movements, see why visionary technology creators are our new priests and why Steve Jobs is the new Pope.

Persona-fication or: Falling in Love with a Bot
3 schedule::attendees
Location Hyatt, TX Ballroom 2-4
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  Kyle Bunch
event::about  By the time SXSW ‘11 kicks off, there will be well over 500 million “people” on Facebook and well over 250 million on Twitter. We used to ask how many of the users on sites like MySpace had a real person on the other end. Today, as increasing sophisticated bots and artificial intelligence intersect with the simplified relationships that fill our social media spaces, we have passed the point where that really matters. The collective cry of the bots grows ever louder: "If you poke us, do we not tweet?" Social touchpoints like toll-free numbers have long been manned by automated systems designed to put a barrier between the customer and the people behind the scenes. Is it any surprise that the same tactics are being used when it comes to social media? This isn't just companies. The virtual world has always offered an opportunity to become someone else, from the earliest BBS and chat room environments to MMORPGs and now social networks. Even if you're not talking to a company-created bot, there's a good chance you're talking to someone pretending to be someone vastly different than their real world doppleganger. When we establish relationships with people we've never met IRL, where does someone become real? And for someone looking for interactivity, how much does ‘real’ matter? If a relationship is little more than passing timely and relevant links and media back and forth, is finding out that you're sharing a friendship with a bot really such a bad thing?
