Artists: 1001 Nights Orchestra
About: Like a short course in ethnomusicology of the Middle East? 1001 Nights Orchestra is Austin’s longest running Middle Eastern music group. Founded by Kamran Hooshmand on oud, guitar, and vocals, it includes clarinet, accordion, percussion and bass. It received a Best of Austin Award for their score to the 1924 silent, “Thief of Bagdad”. Their CD, “Music from the Middle East & Beyond” topped the Austin Chronicle’s Top 10 list. Their performances often features belly dancing as a visual accent to their party sounds.
