Carol Bui
13 schedule::attendees
Location Lovejoys
eventtype  Unofficial Music
event::about

In the three years since Carol Bui released her second record Everyone Wore White, the Tacoma, Washington resident developed two very intense hobbies: drums and Middle Eastern dance. Both of these new pursuits play a role on Bui’s upcoming third record Red Ship available 3/8/11 on Bui’s own Ex Oh Records. Led by the single “Mira: You’re Free With Me” to be released on November 16th, the material on Red Ship is a festive, fiery blend of celebratory Middle Eastern and North African percussion coupled with progressive pop melodic tendencies.

The single brims with the musicality that caused Pitchfork to call Bui’s previous album “...a punk-bred record where the guitar is loud but the tunes prevail” and My Old Kentucky Blog to proclaim it the completion of the rock trifecta that also includes Liz Phair’s Exile In Guyille and PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me. Bui sings, plays drums, guitar, an out-of-tune doumbek, and cabasa on the track. Her longtime collaborator, TJ Lipple of Aloha plays bass and Jason Merriman claps his hands zealously.

3, 2, 1, Twitter: The NASA Tweetup Shuttle Discovery Launch
55 schedule::attendees
Location Hilton, Salon J
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  150 Twitter users were selected, from over 2,500 entries, to attend NASA's STS-133 Discovery shuttle launch, with special access at the press site, and two days of programmed events -- meeting crew, talking to astronauts, exploring NASA -- and to top it all off, to view the launch from the countdown clock. We formed an instant community (within hours of being selected) via Twitter, created a Google group, FB group, email lists, and 15 of us who had never met before rented a house, and started sharing space knowledge, social media knowledge, etc. 4 other shared houses came together. Our house, the Big House, was the hub of all activities. Never having met meant nothing to us. Our first night there we gathered (over 70 of the 150) and formed our space tweeps family. Astronomers, scientists, NASA workers, digital storytellers, educators (k-12 and higher ed), videographers, all passionate about space. The shuttle never launched. The communities which were formed out of this experience are still going strong. The entire week was broadcast on JustinTV by one of our colleagues -- sharing the entire NASA learning experience with thousands of folks. We're invited back to watch the launch when she's scheduled to go in February. This was an amazing use of Social Media, and a perfect example of the power of these tools, and how they can be used to market, share, teach, grow, explore, inspire.

Being Young and Rocking It
89 schedule::attendees
Location Marriott Courtyard, Brazos 2-3
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  Brian Wong
event::about  Being a young entrepreneur in this period of time in business and commerce is an exciting thing. It is your biggest asset. You should rock it. But how do you rock it? How do you overcome traditional preconceived notions of being "younger", more "inexperienced", and "naive"? Simple. You turn them into your strengths. Everyone always talks about how being curious, how retaining youthful characteristics is a great way to succeed without bounds. Why can't those who truly embody those characteristics be the ones that indeed reap those rewards? Most younger entrepreneurs are at the edge of a cliff. They are looking for reasons to jump, or not to jump. There are lots of people willing to tell them all the reasons of why they shouldn't. Very few are there to tell them all the reasons why they should, and to help them throughout to show them how to grow wings in the process. I'm there to nudge them. Being a 19-year-old entrepreneur with a funded start up - experience at a well-known company in the social news landscape, and literally being thrown into a pit of extremely successful entrepreneurs as a non-American (a Canadian), helped prime me to learn all of the lessons that I will be sharing with everyone. Anyone fascinated by the elusive "young" entrepreneur - and especially the type that genuinely takes tangible action towards successful milestones in their career - and wondering about how to learn from them and to help nurture their growth - should come.

With a focus on audience engagement, inspiring passions and building bonds between attendees, these startup conferences are creating a holistic conference approach onstage and offstage before and after the event. These panelists are launching the next generation SXSW's right now and you can too.  BoCo, Big Omaha, Mom 2.0 Summit, TribeCon and the TEDx conferences are some of the new conferences on the new must-attend circuit.  Learn how SXSW is actually incubating and inspiring this new generation of events and how you can produce the next startup conference hit.

Death of the Textbook, Emergence of Games
105 schedule::attendees
Location Hilton Garden Inn, Sabine
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Textbooks published on trees are on the way out in Texas, California and the rest of the country and world. The Textbook industry is hoping they will be replaced with on-line versions spruced up with animated graphics. However, it is likely that on-line textbooks will be no more successful than magazine advertising that morphed into banner ads. Linear content with multiple choice answers at the end of each chapter, won't work. And as with banner ads, on the Internet you can measure that they don't work. What does work? Socially networked GAMES. The question for this panel is whether games will replace traditional educational media, and what those games look like. What will the teachers manual look like? How will learning be assessed? What happens to the classroom, or the school itself, when on-line learning is available 24/7? What does the PTA look like if parents can play along with their kids? What happens to the distinction between vocational and instructional if playing games is equivalent to performing a virtual job or service? And what happens to the college admission process, if instead of taking a standardized aptitude test, students have been playing a complex game for years. In fact, what happens to colleges and universities where lecture halls still reign supreme? There is a revolution underway, driven by kids and the games they play. Will the educational system adapt or die? We will see (and discuss).

Gamechanging: Turn Your App Into A Cooperative Game
146 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 12AB
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Game mechanics aren't just for games anymore. Designers of all social apps increasingly depend on gameplay to motivate users, and direct them towards goals. Organizations, too, use games to engage employees and customers to encourage full participation. Many familiar game mechanics are deeply rooted in competition, pitting people against each other using familiar elements like leaderboards and zero-sum rewards. But there's an alternative: cooperative games provide a wholly different palette to product designers that want to put their users on the same side of a goal. Cooperative games are one way to build a smarter social web, one which organizes people to work together to accomplish really big things. In this highly interactive session we'll actually play a cooperative game to demonstrate how they work. We'll trace these dynamics as they appear in board games (Pandemic, Lord of the Rings), knowledge games used in organizations for brainstorming and planning ("Gamestorming"), and social Web apps (KickStarter, Get Satisfaction). The session will explore the specific mechanics that make this such an effective method for inspiring group performance. - Victory conditions - External conflicts - Roles & special powers - Required sharing - Coordination & planning - And occasionally...Traitors!

Help Save SXSW from Marketer Douchebaggery
81 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom F
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Is SXSWi in danger of being ruined by the influx of marketers to the conference? Coming off of SXSWi 2010, Jolie O'Dell struck a cord with her post WHY SXSW SUCKS "Too many people, not enough tech... dodging and evading these shallow douchebags... only to find swarms of douchebags showing up an hour or so after the location is made known..." We're bringing some smart, caring minds together to move the chatter in the halls into the light of a focused panel. Can SXSWi adapt, or will it be overrun? Has the conference jumped the shark? Voices for both the tech/creator side and the marketer side make up the panel. We're aiming to land on solutions - this isn't meant to be bitch session. How can we address the challenges of a changing audience and optimize the conference for interactions that are valuable? Are some social ground rules called for? What will the audience for SXSWi 2015 look like? Can we envision how it could kick ass? This isn't a challenge unique to SXSW. Most communities struggle similarly to adapt and build value. How can we learn from their mistakes and solutions? The SXSW conference is as resilient as its participants — show up and help #saveSXSW.

How Not to Design Like a Developer
90 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom B
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Open source projects, in particular, have long skimped on presentation and packaging (basically, they are the equivalent of "she has a great personality!" in the world of blind dating). This talk is on how designer (graphic, UI & UX, all deft ninjas of the visual and editorial) organize and contribute their visual hacks to open source projects, working in tandem with engineers. Specifically, we'll look at how designers can get involved with Mozilla's Creative Collective, as well as how developers can leverage some of lessons learned by Mozilla's workflow and community-organizing techniques to foster their own design communities and inspire individuals to contribute to other open source projects of all sizes. People who have contributed to or are working on an open source project, do so in an effort to create and distribute free software (free as in “free speech” v. free as in “drinks on me tonight!”*). This is a great opportunity to get involved with a team and movement (or start your own) that making a better and more awesome internet. My Kindergartner Markets Better Than You
71 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom E
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Marketing is a fine line between sales and PR. This panel aims to focus on the rudimentary principles of marketing often overlooked by both new and established businesses. Special attention will be paid to "playground tactics" and ways that kids can influence others with far more success than adults. Kids have a natural instinct for marketing - they learn early in life to bring enough for everyone, to become an expert at everything, and to share just enough to make the friends but not so much where they turn others away. By approaching marketing like a five year old, brands can develop and maintain a strong identity and establish a role as an influencer in the industry. Applying concepts like bringing enough for everyone (appealing to a wide range of audiences), or staying out of detention (being marked as spam), brands too can become an expert at everything (establish itself as an industry leader). A typical five-year-old can identify common commercial jingles and name the season's popular toys. Five minutes in a playgroup can result in families having to take a trip to the toy store because of the influence of other kids on their own children. Kindergartners have a lot of influence. Its time to start following their lead and start learning the right way to approach marketing.

No Child Left Inside: Mobile Tech Meets Education
67 schedule::attendees
Location Hilton Garden Inn, Rio
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  This panel looks at mobile learning technologies and programs that get students outside, envisioning a classroom framed by the sky, earth, and everything in between. The No Child Left Inside Act (NCLIA) now in Congress seeks to enhance the environmental literacy of K-12 students “to foster understanding, analysis, and solutions to the major environmental challenges” facing the nation. There is a tremendous opportunity to engage young people in science that connects their local environment to global problems, and technology is crucial to effectuate its promise. Five hundred million eyes looked on as Neil Armstrong stepped onto the Moon; under NCLIA, with eyes trained on the environment around them, learners could now help address a problem as complex as climate change. By implementing a citizen science-based model that leverages mobile technology, NCLIA could help form a scientifically literate citizenry while researchers explore questions previously unanswerable. Richard Louv’s "Last Child in the Woods" explores how going outside improves the well-being of young people, and fosters what E. O. Wilson has termed “biophilia.” Programs that combine appropriate technologies with outdoor experience can give learners a new point of entry to scientific understanding beyond textbooks, and introduce new modes of assessment beyond standardized tests.

event::about  Programming is writing. A programmer's job is to express abstract ideas in a specific language - just like the poet, the essayist, and the composer. But while writers and composers spend years improving their style, many programmers think style stops with "two-space indentation". This needs to change. This presentation will discuss style in music, writing, and software. We'll look at such diverse sources as George Orwell, Mozart, and punk music, and will find that much of art revolves around complexity and minimalism - just like software. Finally, we'll look at specific patterns and tools for writing software that is not just effective and efficient, but stylistically beautiful.

Rebooting Iceland: Crowdsourcing Innovation in Uncertain Times
57 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 9ABC
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  In the US, social media innovators are changing the way people work and play. In Iceland, these innovators may offer the best hope of rescuing an entire nation. Iceland emerged in the 1990s as a financial powerhouse after a thousand years on the sidelines of global history. Icelanders became one of the world’s wealthiest and happiest nations. In 2008, three of its banks collapsed, sending the national economy into a tailspin and shattering the people’s trust in government and industry. The government was quickly replaced by one promising transparency and reforms, while a protest party headed by a comedian took control of the Reykjavik city council. This new cast of politicians is not alone in their efforts to move Iceland out from under the economic cloud. Members of the country's tech and entrepreneurial sector, which saw explosive growth in the lead-up to the collapse, have emerged as leaders in grassroots efforts to set Iceland on a sustainable path. In 2009, a loosely-organized group calling themselves the Anthill convened a “National Assembly” of 1,500 citizens. The day-long event, based on Agile methods and crowdsourcing theory, resulted in a coherent set of values, vision and ideas. A second National Assembly was held in 2010 as a preparatory step in the development of a new national constiution. Inspired by open-source processes and leaning heavily on social media technologies, these citizens are rapidly prototyping new forms of democracy utilizing the web and open innovation.

Unleashing Employees: Empower Innovation From The Ground Up
81 schedule::attendees
Location Hilton, Salon K
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Groundswell technology comes to consumers first. At home, we get social, mobile, video and cloud services pitched to us 24x7. Empowering technologies will always come to consumers first because it's a wide-open market. A single developer can build an application that changes the world from a broadband-connected bedroom. All this technology puts tremendous power directly into the hands of customers and they often have more information than your sales or services team does. You'd better make sure you give customers better information than they can get elsewhere. The only way to do that is to empower employees to directly engage the needs and expectations of customers. Fortunately, they are not standing still. Your innovative employees are already building new solutions using these same technologies to solve customer problems. In fact, 37% of US information workers use do-it-yourself technology to get work done. It's covert innovation – your employees solving your business problems at the ground level. The challenge is to support this innovation while keeping the company safe. That takes a whole new way of thinking and acting. It takes an empowered IT organization working under a new set of principles. Empowerment is chapter 3 in the Internet story. Chapter 1 was the Web. Chapter 2 was Social Computing. It has that feel of inevitability. Companies like Best Buy that empower employees to solve customer problems will win. Companies that don't will lose.

Web 3.0 and Human Computation: Ancient Mayan Legacy
42 schedule::attendees
Location Hyatt, Big Bend
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  [Session will be presented in ENGLISH. Sesión será presentada en INGLÉS – Web 3.0 y Computación Humana: Legado Maya. SXSW Latin America programming hashtag: #sxswLatAm] The small country of Guatemala is contributing positively to the advent of web 3.0? This panel will share some of the research and projects from Guatemalan Artificial Intelligence Scientists and how a small group of a few hundred young engineers have churned out dozens of prototypes and concepts for semantic web ontologies that solve real world problems and dilemmas. The prototypes combine Semantic searches and Semantic Databases which are the base of Web 3.0. One can argue that “it was not in vain” that the Ancient Mayan people of Guatemala are known to have been the pioneers in the use of “zero” amongst all the great World civilizations. General theme of Web 3.0 to be covered by the panelists: The rapid growth and development of the Web has made it be unequally divided, ranging from Web 1.0 to Web 3.0, and even Web 4.0. Still today the main challenge is the “searching and presenting” of information. The explicit representation of the semantics underlying web resources will enable a knowledge-based web that provides a qualitatively new level of service. Automated services will one day assist humans in achieving their goals by "understanding" more of the content on the web and thus provide more accurate filtering, categorization, and search of information sources. Ontologies will play a key role.

event::about  This is a talk about winning the nerd lottery: The luckiest fanboy in fandom gets a shot to spend three months with unfettered access to mission control--that’s a journalistic first and potential NASA no-no. It’s just your average summer trying to capture the story of 130 of the world’s best planetary scientists exploring the north pole of Mars. It’s a warts-and-all look at the Phoenix Mars mission and NASA’s space narrative from a regular guy who once dreamed of leaving the planet. We’ll focus our space story on a Martian photographer. “Don’t call me that,” Peter Smith, the world’s greatest Martian Photographer says. “And don’t make me look like some wacko mad scientist.” Peter has a hard enough time with the mission’s image as it is. Peter is particular about image because he knows how getting it right has the potential to inspire the next generation of adventurers. More than half his team is here because they grew up watching Apollo and Viking missions. “What’s going to inspire the next generation?” He wants to know. We all want to know.

Are We Not Men? Reaching New American Dads
26 schedule::attendees
Location Marriott Courtyard, Rio Grande A
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Men's media has changed tremendously- almost as much as men and dads have. Today's dads are active in every aspect of the household, from parenting to chores, and yet, they are largely overlooked as readers and consumers. New American Dads are thirsty for knowledge and a community that speaks their common language - that of the real man. The new language of men helps Jacks of all trades learn how to be better at all of them, retain their essential masculinity and perform well in a new paradigm of family, work and self. Traditional media outlets - those that espouse the virtues of supposedly manly interests ($10,000 suits, rare scotch and women, women, women) are missing an opportunity to serve this emerging male marked. In order to speak 'Dad,' media must speak to the realities of his life, his priorities, responsibilities, aspirations and, above all else, be useful. The growing online media directed at the New American Dad understands that service journalism - that which seeks to inform as well as entertain - is the next evolution in the daddy blogger. Blogs have their place, but in order to effect change in men's media, online resources must engage the reader in a conversation, one in which the consumer walks away feeling better informed than they had before engaging the site. Service journalism - how-tos, how it works and best-of lists - have practical applications in readers' lives, thus engendering loyalty and creating conversations with a long overlooked population, while developing an audience for whom older media models based on supposed aspiration and stereotype have little meaningful impact. Speak to dads in their language, encourage them to speak back, teach them something they can use and entertain them - this is the next evolution of men's media.

Can You Trust Me?
54 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 8A
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  Paul Parkin
event::about  It’s no secret that it’s been a tough time for some of the world’s most trusted brands—BP, Google and Facebook are just a few of the companies that have been recent victims of brand erosion. In the digital age, information (truth and hearsay alike) flows like water, opinions spread like wildfire—one day a brand is synonymous with trust for millions of people, the next day it’s being dragged through the digital mud by a few over a product recall or privacy violation. Unfortunately, it’s happening faster and with bigger implications and greater transparency than ever before. Consumers have stopped basing their trust of successful brands on the mere knowledge that they are financially successful—or because they run ads that inspire trustworthiness. In fact, it seems the very definition of “brand trust” is morphing as rapidly as technology is. More often, an increasingly-skeptical public is flocking to the web for real-time information and social network commentary posted by “officials” or by anyone else with an Internet connection and an axe to grind. Paul Parkin, Founding Partner of SALT Branding and expert on brand building, will provide an overview of the ever-evolving “brandscape” and share strategies for building and maintaining brand trust online and offline. He will also discuss how to best redefine and measure brand trust across different generations—Baby Boomers, Gen X and Gen Y—and why consumer collaboration will be key for marketers in the years to come.

Do Agencies Need to Think Like Software Companies?
136 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom F
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  How much do marketers (& their agencies) need to know about technology? Advertisers and brand marketers are entering a brave new world -- one where code is on par with content. "Consumers" are now "users." So should "marketers" be "developers"? Enter the hybrid marketer. More and more agencies are finding they need to educate and cultivate a new breed of people who understand tech from a marketing and brand perspective, and who have a consumer mindset. At the same time, agencies are adopting practices--agile development, continuous deployment--learned from the tech world. But should they really try this stuff at home? Should "marketers" be worrying about, say, the video capability of the latest iPhone, or pushing the envelope with HTML5? Or should they just stick to their core competencies and work with established software companies / dev shops to realize their ideas? How else is technology affecting the agency model and the creative process?

event::about  The mobile landscape as we know it is focused heavily on gaming, productivity and social media applications. But as mobile technology continues to advance and phones become smarter, people will search for even more intimate, immersive and interactive ways of expressing themselves. Today, mobile technologies have made music creation easy, affordable and accessible to the masses, enabling users of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, to create and share music, regardless of previous musical knowledge. Whether you’re a fan of hip hop, classic, pop or video game theme music, there is an app for everyone. And the entertainment industry has taken notice – almost every big name artist or brand has an app for mobile devices. Most of them are just fancy message boards providing information, but some are pushing the limits of what it means to interact with the artist or brand. From the palm of your hand you can Auto-Tune your voice to sound like your favorite hip hop star, play an instrument designed by Jorden Ruddess of Dream Theater or join a virtual Glee club. Each of these artists and brands are building communities thru mobile apps that provide anyone the ability to explore their inner star. Folkways These Days: Crafty Knowledge in Digital Networks
55 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 10AB
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  With the rise of the virtual has come a renewed interest in the material. Evidence of this renewed interest is everywhere in pop culture, from steampunk to Maker Faire, from Readymade to Make to Etsy, from yarn bombing to LED throwies. We see it in craft: the handmade mandolin, the carefully stitched quilt, the custom cabinet. We see it in the vinyl resurgence and the newfound nostalgia for the mix tape. We see it in the Bamboo Bike Studio. We see it in the resurrection of Polaroid film by the IMPOSSIBLE project. Even as we go further into digital culture, we’re getting up from the computer to hold stuff, to make stuff, to shake stuff. And yet, there’s a sense that renewed interest in the material is facilitated by digital networks. That is, we go online to learn about craft, to meet-up with makers, to feed our fetishes. We send pictures of our creations from our digital devices to our social networks. All over the Web non-technical people are using new media to create, arrange, redesign, archive, and distribute their crafts. As they do, new techno-folkways are being passed down not only via new tools and networks, but also--as William Graham Sumner writes in his seminal book, Folkways--by "tradition, imitation, authority.” Folkways--the paths worn by mild social pressure--are being trod online. This panel will explore the various crossroads where craftwork meets network, with special attention paid to bridging the digital divide in rural America.

51 schedule::attendees
Location Marriott Courtyard, Brazos 2-3

event::about  There are many ways to make a pittance as a blogger. Google ads will bring home a very small amount of bacon. Maybe a slice. The book deal, though coveted, is often meager at best. And there are all of those adorable animal species who are just waiting for their photos to be manipulated into something even cuter/funnier/more irritating, but what happens when the next tiny cute animal comes along? Moms ought to pour their hearts out every day for more than free fabric softener. How can bloggers get paid appropriately for generating and promoting content and managing a loyal community? How about a leap from the job where you spend most of your day ignoring the tedium by blog surfing, checking out Twitter and replying to the growing comments on your blog, into a position that will probably pay better and allow you to use all of those skills you learned as a blogger? This presentation will show both sides of taking skills learned as a blogger and translating them into a career change or enhancement. The presentation will be conducted from two points of view-the blogger, and, the hiring manager.

Got Great UGC, Poor Monetization?
38 schedule::attendees
Location Hyatt, Hill Country CD
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  Marty Roberts
event::about  What makes your user-generated content great? It’s the users. If they like it, they’ll come and stick around. So if they like what they see and you’ve got a high number of video views, how do make that work for your business? First, you have to realize that building an audience and monetizing UGC doesn’t require a special strategy, because everything your content business puts out into the world already comes from a socially-oriented vantage point. Uh-oh; you mean you don’t have that mindset? Okay, that’s a problem. You can’t expect people to engage and share if everything you do doesn’t give them a reason to care. During this panel, we’ll talk about why a user-focused approach is the best foundation for UGC campaign success. We’ll discuss transparency of ads and sponsorships, balancing content and ads, good design, and how UGC sites with large, naturally engaged audiences can build on their success.

eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  Clay Spinuzzi
event::about  Companies always try to grow so they can do more things, add more capabilities, and make more money - right? Not anymore: Not in Austin, or in many other places. People are finding that digital and mobile technologies can help them to organize more loosely and rapidly, and that means they can keep small and flexible, scale up when necessary, and link up with other loose organizations to swarm big projects, even if they are freelancers working out of their own houses, coffee shops, or coworking spaces. How do these loose organizations work? In this core conversation, I'll briefly share stories from my research into some of Austin's loose organizations: freelancers, coworking spaces, and an internet startup. I'll discuss how the organizations in my research hold together, function, and build links with each other. With these cases in mind, I'll moderate a discussion about attendees' own experiences with loose organizations and brainstorm ways to make them run more effectively. Afterwards, I'll post conversation notes on my blog so we can keep the ball rolling after SXSW.

event::about  Generally speaking, there's an assumption that casual games are a waste of time. What can playing a "meaningless" Facebook game for a few minutes really accomplish, anyways? Do I really need to "rescue" another "sheep"? Another point of view is that they're a little bit sinister, manipulating you into emptying your wallet, or giving up personal information. But perhaps both positions are missing the point. This new genre we call "Casual Social Games" represents a fascinating opportunity to better understand our own behavior, and to direct it, intentionally, for our own benefit, and for the greater good of society.

Social Network Users' Bill of Rights: You Decide
53 schedule::attendees
Location Hyatt, Hill Country AB
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  The Facebook and Google privacy controversies of Spring 2010 highlighted the gap between technical innovation and user expectations on a global scale, leading representatives of various user constituencies to draft a definitive Social Media Users Bill of Rights for the 21st Century at the Computers, Freedom and Privacy Conference in San Jose, CA. The idea of a Social Network Users’ Bill of Rights (#billofrights) has been around for years, but no large user set has actually collated the key values and principles that should go into such a Bill of Rights and put them to a world-wide vote – until now. All privacy law is based to some degree on social norms. The panelists and other representatives of various user constituents drafted a definitive Social Media Users Bill of Rights. This kicked off a conversation between Facebook, the ACLU and others affected by technology’s expansion into daily life. The next step is to debate and have a public vote on it. The voting is open from now until June 15, 2011 – the anniversary of the date the U.S. government asked Twitter to delay its scheduled server maintenance as a critical communication tool for use in the 2009 Iran elections. As the preamble of the document reads, "We the Users," the “Bill of Rights” document has been released to the public for vetting and debate. This is an important step, both from a future activism and legislative perspective, in the fight to define our digital futures. Through this discussion, we will explore the evolution of privacy in the digital age, the changing relationship between users and online service providers, and the social, political and cultural ramifications of life in a networked world – and the SXSWi community will have a say in the development of a watershed document for user rights online.

The Potential of Augmented Reality for Education
61 schedule::attendees
Location Hilton Garden Inn, Rio
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Augmented Reality (AR) is on the verge of becoming a household name. Even though the concepts and technologies that make AR possible have been around for quite sometime, the tech-savvy community has been abuzz lately as mobile platforms such as iOS and Android have played a large role in bringing AR to the masses. But what is AR? In a nutshell, AR is a reality or environment that is augmented by layers of computer-generated information. Recent AR technologies have allowed for mobile devices to add layers of reality atop the world we see through our cell phone cameras. Several applications such as Layar, AroundMe and others allow users to find and interact with information and other users by simply panning their cell phones around them. What are some current examples of AR technologies, applications and potential uses around today? How does this technology affect education? What types of knowledge, community-building activities, contextual and informal learning experiences can be created with AR? How can we use AR to augment learning outcomes and creation of communities of practice? These are just some of the questions we will discuss on this panel.

The Steroid Culture of Social Media: You Use?
36 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 6AB
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Ever think about taking shortcuts to boost your numbers? You know, the numb that show the success of all those interactive social media marketing programs. The numbers that decide your end of year bonus. The numbers that make you "important" to all those other social media influencers. I know you have. You know you have. But did you use those performance enhancing social media techniques? Humans are naturally drawn to shortcuts. Even when they are already successful. Take Barry Bonds. Not the Barry Bonds you remember with the bulging muscles in San Francisco. The younger, leaner version. The one who was with the Pirates and on his way to the Hall of Fame. Each day he worked hard on the fundamentals of the game. Then, boom, he was on steroids, a caricature of himself and a tarnished legacy. Why? The numbers competition. We all know the equivalent of a Barry Bonds in social media. Someone who is enhancing their performance the wrong way. Maybe it started with a simple list buy of Twitter followers. But then suddenly they were researching blackhat SEO techniques for a temporary boost in traffic. Then one day they wake up in a cold sweat after an all night Astroturfing session. It's time to get help! Join us for a frank discussion on how the steroid culture has infected the social media realm. We will discuss the signs of a social media steroid user, how it hurts us all and a 12-step program to rehab those that have already fallen down the hole.

Why Everything is Amazing But Nobody is Happy
157 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 5ABC
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  According to Louis CK: "Everything is amazing and nobody is happy". Are we humans overwhelmed by witnessing Moore’s Law in action? Has Social Media and it’s accessories left us technologically rich but spiritually bankrupt? This panel will explore the effects Social Media is having on us as humans and spiritual creatures in three areas: -Our Evolution: Humans have spent millions of years hunting and gathering but just the past few pointing, clicking and tweeting. What effect is Social Media having on our development as human beings? Is it ushering us into the next stage of human evolution or is it just making monkeys out of us? -Our Relationships: Facebook is being cited by divorce lawyers as the next big catalyst for marriage break-ups, but it can also connect us with amazing people we never would have met otherwise. And what about our relationships with ourselves when we can’t even sit quietly alone because we have an iPhone? How can we use these tools to become actual friends and not just Facebook friends? -Our Spirituality: Social Media can connect us with some truly transcendent moments (Paul Potts singing opera) and these moments can make the human spirit soar. But, in the long run, is it just dumbing us down with instant gratification and vibrating Twitter notifications? This panel will explore how we can use our embarrassment of technological riches to become better and more content people.

What’s going on? Time and again as an interactive media producer & professor, I've encountered gamers who’ve found their soulmates in-world. With digital citizens spending a staggering 3-billion hours a week in online games, what are they onto that the rest of us should know? How is the internet fostering our primal instincts? And how can we apply this magic to our real lives? Seeking answers, I challenged myself to look for love in one of the most unlikely places: World of Warcraft. My journey has me exploring the addictive pull of online worlds: the rush of adventure & the feeling of accomplishment at the end of a challenge. So how we can apply this allure to real life to reengage with the physical world? That’s the $3-billion question. In this presentation, I’ll reveal the 10 secrets that online games teach us about succeeding in life & love. I’ll share the harrowing trials & tribulations of heartbreak & hardware malfunctions, the sage wisdom gained in conversations over all-night raids, and the unlikely lessons about life, success, perseverance & communication I’ve learned along the way, from these digital gaming obsessions. Block Party Capitalism: Where Analog and Digital Intersect
81 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom F
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  What do pickles; vinyl records, urban chickens, Farmville, flea markets and Tumblr have in common? They are all part of 'block party capitalism,' built on the idea that old-fashioned values like provenance, commitment, quality and authenticity are finding renewed commercial and social relevance through new technologies. This next evolution of our digital world is where off and online intersect to make everyday life more economical, meaningful and pleasant. A pickle merchant in Brooklyn starts on a skateboard and through bloggers and hard work grows into a sustainable business. Vinyl records in San Francisco flourish as people showcase their passion for better sound and feel on Tumblr's Vinyl Sunday's. Backyard chicken farmers in Dallas suburbs multiply through an online community to share tips on raising coops, while flea markets across the U.S. grow into modern day malls driven in large part by the viral loops of mobile media. This panel includes start up founders, large companies and local entrepreneurs who work at the intersection of this analog and digital movement. They will help us explore how it’s changing the way we buy, sell and live.

This phenomenon has created a “ Internet Hate Incubator” that has accelerated and heated hate speech to a boiling point. Facebook, YouTube and Twitter have become prime breeding grounds for hate groups, cyberbullying and terrorist recruiting cells, all hiding behind the protections offered by First Amendment protected speech. What can we do to stem the tide of hatred? What can parents do as their children are exposed to this steady stream of hatred in a world where there is no longer a barrier between the brick and mortar world of hatred and the safety of the home? Hate Gone Viral attempts to answer those questions and explains how the Internet Hate Incubator and the Social Hate Incubator are playing roles in the increase in hate speech and violence in our society.

19 schedule::attendees
Location Marriott Courtyard, Brazos 2-3
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  Brian Reich
event::about  There is a giant meteor headed our way... and we need to knock it off course or life as we know it will cease to exist. If that news turned out to be true, you would do everything you could to save the world, right? Well, an equivalent disaster is unfolding before our eyes. Everything about our society is changing - rapidly and constantly. How we communicate, get and share information, and engage each other — online and offline - is different than it was just a few short years ago. Information moves faster, people are more closely connected, and the level of interest and commitment that people have when it comes to the organizations they engage, the transactions they make, the issues they care about and the causes they support has never been greater. Our society has changed and how organizations operate and communicate, the products we sell and services we offer, what causes we support, how we address serious issues - and find solutions to the biggest challenges we face as a global community -- needs to change as well. If we don't change - everything - we are doomed. This session will outline the changes... in thinking, organization, education, engagement, government, media, and everything else... that need to be made.

How Farmers Get Serious Business Done With Mobile
43 schedule::attendees
Location Hyatt, Hill Country AB
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Conventional wisdom says that farmers aren't "wired." The only truth in this statement is that they aren't spending much time on desktop computers - in fact, the majority of their computing is done on mobile devices. Farmers are becoming increasingly dependent on wireless technology, from tweeting about industry issues, checking markets, researching equipment, booking trips to China and connecting with their kids on Facebook - all during their time in the cab of a GPS-piloted combine. This panel will explore the various applications for mobile technology on the farm, how farmers are getting serious business done with smartphones, and what new innovations are coming around the corner.

Interactive Comics: Techniques to Enhance Math Education
34 schedule::attendees
Location Hilton Garden Inn, Rio
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  John Baird
event::about  Comics have a long history of use in education and promoting understanding in a wide range of topics from English to history to public health. This presentation covers multiple levels of the employment of comics in math education, beginning with simple classroom activities, moving into mathematics pedagogical research methodology, and delving into advanced cognitive research to explore the mechanisms of how comics reinforce instruction. As a teaching tool, comics are inherently well suited for patterns, geometric shapes, and visual representations of data. They can be a form of stealth teaching - engaging students to think creatively about mathematics, helping instill intrinsic motivation and improving long-term retention. Accurate assessment of math attitudes and learning environments is a key challenge in addressing discrepancies in knowledge and performance. Comicvoice, a research method using comics to collect individual perspectives and has demonstrated utility in exploring similar public health topics, has strong applicability to this problem. Navigating the symbolic language of math is a known barrier for many students. Current research into how the brain translates concepts and similarities suggests that comics provide a pathway for alleviating this barrier through the very nature of being “sequential art.” By traversing through each of these stages, a holistic picture of comics’ place in the development of advanced math pedagogical techniques becomes clear.

Using a blend of cunning grifts and custom software, Max Butler stole millions from modest credit unions, financial behemoths, even fellow hackers. But his most daring feat--and his eventual undoing--came when he succeeded in crowning himself sole ruler of a worldwide computer fraud network. Metrics for Social Media: The Net Promoter Score
134 schedule::attendees
Location Hyatt, Hill Country CD
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Now that social media is accepted practice in the business world, the question still remains, how do you measure it?. The "bottom line" (ex. return on investment) is generally what comes to mind first for Leadership, but how do you measure your social media efforts when the focus of your business includes repeat and referral business? In their presentation, Mark Krupinski and Jeremy Hilton define the Net Promoter Score along with a case for it’s consideration as a Return on Investment (ROI) metric for your social media initiatives. Additionally, they compare this measurement with other customer loyalty and sentiment formulas currently being championed by industry leaders. Lastly, Mark and Jeremy review real world examples of the Net Promoter Score in practice by mainstream organizations.

62 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 10AB
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Some people carry the internet in their pocket and can't imagine a life without network. Some people have no internet at all and can't imagine a life with email. There is a complex combination of emotional, political and logistical reasons why 35% of Americans have no broadband at home and why 22% do not use the internet at all. We can't start solving the problem until we understand it. We'll untangle and explore those reasons from a variety of urban and rural perspectives, with an eye towards finding solutions and demythologizing the process. We'll give examples and we'll name names.

OMG - My Pancreas Just Texted
32 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom C
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  John Pettengill
event::about  I am not a doctor. I am not a medical researcher or lab technician. I have never watched a complete episode of Grey’s Anatomy. But I am a Type 1 Diabetic. I am just one of 25.8 million Americans with Diabetes. We're all kinda experts on managing chronic disease. Because, really, outside of a doctor’s visit every 6 months or so, we’re the ones doing all the work. No one taught us how to do this. A meeting or two with a dietician isn’t enough, the behavioral changes necessary for those with a chronic disease are wholly unsupported in our current medical system. We have to do something. 7 out of 10 deaths in the US are caused by a chronic disease, and between heart disease and diabetes alone we are, as a nation, hemorrhaging money. Many of these conditions are preventable through lifestyle changes that no doctor can write a prescription for. Doctors like to talk about charts and graphs, blood tests and medicine. Let’s start talking about the patient, the person, instead. Let’s make a disease that you have for life something that’s simply managed every day. Let’s get isolated patients together, talking, trading tips and tricks. We’ll be talking about this (and more) at ‘OMG – My Pancreas Just Texted’.

Shine Light On Others To Build Your Brand
54 schedule::attendees
Location Marriott Courtyard, Rio Grande B
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  The real-time web is quickly becoming a reality that allows your developing online social graph to be recorded into a stream of social activity. These increasingly popular lifestreams show the shifts around the social connections, the ways in which they’re made and the content discovered within each interaction, a unique indicator of the changing ways that consumers are also interacting with brands. Inside this stream of activities is a movement that is starting to take hold beyond just a re-tweet. More and more people are leveraging their social and corporate networks to create change whether in their community or across the globe. Social media and our blogs allow us to help rally our networks around a cause. Shining a light on others - without expecting anything in return - is the surest way to grow, strengthen, and promote your very own brand. This panel will address why it is important for brands and individuals to join the pay it forward movement. We’ll give you real examples and ideas on how you can leverage your social capital to rise above the noise, affect change, and get more enjoyment from your social networks.

The Connected Car: Driving Technology
41 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom A
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  Connectivity – or “telemetric” in the auto industry – is using a car to keep you connected while behind the wheel. Mostly the auto industry is focused on developing systems for infotainment and personal connectivity through Bluetooth. That’s cool stuff that makes the driving experience more fun and helps us stay connected on the road, but we’re pushing for a much broader approach. Your vehicle can be more than a smartphone on wheels – it can be a platform for data collection and sharing. With embedded technology, like OnStar, a vehicle can pull all kinds of data. Now connect that platform via cloud computing to the social media space and share data among multiple audiences. Smart software tools would analyze the cloud based on knowledge of drive including, equipment use, services used, etc., to make accurate predictions that could figure out intent. Having an intelligent “intent engine” that processes the cloud, you could access highly relevant and personalized information that enables the cloud to work for you. We’re on the cusp of something ginormous here and our partners too. What’s next for wireless communication, video conference and social interaction? How can these converge in a vehicle? How does OnStar leverage Verizon, Skype and Facebook to work in ways never thought possible? This session is sponsored by Chevy.

The Sexual Survival Guide For Geeks
19 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Room 18ABCD
eventtype  Panel, Film
Speaker  Violet Blue
event::about  What they say about geeks, sex, relationships and hooking up just isn't true: we ARE hot and nerdy, and when it comes to events like SXSWi we could all use a little "booty call boot camp". Anyone can read sex ed basics online, but when you're faced with real-life situations and the nuances of quirky geeks who are smarter than the average hottie, and have that irresistible OCD, you'll need to know more than how to Google a pickup line or navigate a smooth SXSWi afterparty fling. In this talk, leading sex educator Violet Blue explains: * Sexual health basics, including safer sex 101. * Exactly how to have a smooth negotiation about safer sex. * Rules and tips for geek flirting. * Do's and Don'ts of picking up on geeks. * Sex etiquette and social media. * How to have a great one-nighter and feel happy saying hi in the halls the next day. * Navigating honesty (and health issues) when someone is cheating. * Consent: saying yes and no to sex with clarity and coolness. * How to have a hot time without pissing off your hotel roommates. * Why geeks are better lovers, and how to attract a geek. * Geek-specific suggestions for seeing each other after SXSW. While heterosexually focused in scope, this presentation will be inclusive of all genders and orientations. Includes a handout of recommendations for a Geek Sexual Survival Kit.

event::about  The topic of Singularity is heating up as more people discuss what will become of the human race when computers exceed our intelligence. This presentation explores several theories about the future of mankind and points out how the technology leading us there is already HERE. “The Singularity is Near” is a book and movie written by futurist and prominent Singularitarian, Ray Kurzweil. It is a documentary with a B-line drama where Ray’s digital alter ego Ramona sets off on a quest to pass the Turing Test. Passing this test signifies the day computers can “think”, which came close to occurring a few years ago and is not far off. Learn what milestones we have already reached toward Singularity and what technologies present and future are leading us there. We will explore Location Based Services, Augmented Reality, Bio-Feedback and Smart Agents. We will analyze current trends in Bio-Technology, Nano-Technology, Computing and Robotics and discuss the possibility of Digital Immortality.

U.S. Military's Mad Science Revealed

Location Hilton, Salon K
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
event::about  For more than 50 years the mad scientists at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency—aka DARPA, the outrageous research arm of the Pentagon—have been launching the most disruptive technologies on earth, living up to their mantra of “high risk—high payoff.” We have DARPA to thank for the personal computer, the Internet, the Berkeley Unix system, most of NASA, and countless crazy military innovations. Their mission is to think beyond the possible and forever be three decades ahead. In this talk we will dig into, and present the relevant parts of, DARPA’s $3 billion-dollar budget, pulling out the most amazing and most-likely-to-reach-fruition projects. Think electromagnetic bazookas, telepathic soldiers, ape-inspired robots, memory chips in brains, shapeshifting planes and boats. It might sound like sci-fi, but given its inspired history it seems that analyzing DARPA’s current projects will give us one of the clearest views into our future reality. Fasten your seat belts.

Why Would We Think Social Media Is Revolutionary?
133 schedule::attendees
Location Austin Convention Center, Ballroom D
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  Clay Shirky
event::about  The conversation around social media and political action has been roughly divided into idealists ("Social tools help people collaborate in general, so they will help insurgents in particular") and the realists ("It's never happened in an autocracy, but it's failed many times.") That conversation changed on January 14th, when Tunisian insurgents used those tools to help coordinate the ouster of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. That and subsequent events in the region make the idealist position more realistic, and the realist position less so. Given that change, what can we understand about the effects social media did and didn't have in the pro-democratic uprisings, and what, if anything, can we do to help?

Will Your New Technology Win? Ask a Tree
49 schedule::attendees
Location Hilton, Salon H
eventtype  Panel, Interactive
Speaker  Ross Mclean
event::about  Picking the right new technology to bet on and be on is a fundamental challenge in just about any business. But separating the future blockbuster from the flash-in-the-pan early enough in its lifespan to matter often baffles many of the smartest among us. This presentation proposes a simple analogy to help us dramatically improve our ability to predict which new technologies are destined to be the next Facebook, and which will be the next Second Life. By taking the audience on a historical tour of successes and failures in human technological innovation and filtering the cases through core principles of psychology, anthropology and other social sciences it makes two core points. First, it helps us understand why we are often blind to truly great and novel ideas and how we can learn to see them better. Second, it lays out a set of simple principles and a shockingly simple core analogy that anyone working in a field that requires getting humans and technology to interact can use every day.
